Yes, you are right, the title of this picture is "taxi-beetle", and the reason is really simple - please just look at upper side of this ground beetle: there are some passangers!!! :>

The "taxi-beetle" is a male of Carabus granulatus Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and the passangers are larvae of mites (Acari).

Mites are rather common "passangers" on different insects (e.g. dragonflies and flies). Usually they can be parasites or commensals.

In ground beetles (Carabidae) mites were noted as:
- ecto- and endoparasites
- commensals
- synphoronts
revealing variable degree of beetle- mite association, often restricted to single species or even single part of beetle body (eg. elytrae, antennae, ect.).

More than 20 families of mites were noted till know as occurring on ground beetles, with the most "popular": Caraboacaridae, Podapolipidae, Ascidae, Antennosceiidae, and Canestriniidae.

And last but not least I would like to dedicate this picture to Siegfried Potrykus (siggi) :>

All the best and thank you in advance for your time and visit! :>

Hello Radomir,
a superb picture of this ground bettle. Obviously not easy to take out of different reasons:
these creatures are restless runners, can quickly hide and have "photographer-unfriendly" colour and surface!
Nevertheless, you professionally present us the specimen including its passengers.
Best wishes and all the best for 2009,
Peter

very beautiful capture , amazing details and colours , great composition,

Hi Radek and a belated Happy New Year!

First i want to wish you an exceptional 2009 in your personal and professional life. I hope that all your studies will also go well and that perhaps we might even meet at last :)

This is another interesting post from you, showing this big beetle sadly full of parasites. Your shot is well taken - with a good balance of flash as well - the makes the natural contrast between the beetle and mites even more evident. And, they are some fat little ba$tards, too.
Very sharp and very well focused picture and a nice informative note to go with it, too.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Radomir,
A great macro of this Carabid beetle with its mite 'passengers'. The lighting, composition on the bark and sharpness all contribute to make this a first class image.
Thanks for sharing this unique image and best wishes from a cold grey Åhus,

Hallo Radomir,

Your photo is very interesting and your note too. The image is very sharp and the DOF is big enough to show sharply the whole insect. Good details of the insect and parasite can be seen.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Radomir,
I see that you also present a black beetle and a funny one. The title is well chosen! Actually I often observed this taxi-function on insects. Excellent picture of the Scarabus granulatus. You managed the light very well and the sharpness too.
Thanks also for your kind help for my Lucanidae beetle.
Best regards
Anne

Hejka,
Dziękuję i pozdrawiam cieplutko z mroźnego Podlasia.

hello radomir

great picture,
with good sharpness and colours
greeting lou

Saludos Radomir: Josep Ignasi.

Hello Radomir

Hi Radek,

thanks to you the TN watchers get to see some of the Adephaga, a group quite underrepresented here. Your "Grainy Carabid" is a fine example. As usual, you mastered the techniques, rendered the black color and the faint purple right and showed something interesting to boot: here its the taxi clients. Since I found the picture a little dark on my screen, I propose a post-processed workshop version. Judge it for yourself whether there is an improvement.

Best regards from icy Marly
Dietrich

Hi Radomir

An interesting post, I've seen mites on insects before - well since joining TN I've started to notice these things, but I've never seen their larvae before. Great ISO, sharpness and details. Black beetles on brown bark is hard to get the details, but you've done very well.
