[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This time something from my summer shots - Brimstone butterfly Gonepteryx rhamni.

In Poland it is called Lemon Leaf. The first part of the name has it's origin in vivid yellow colour of wings of a male, when the second part refers to the shape of the wings that resemble a leaf. In many other languages names are quite simmilar. In English speaking countries it is called Brimstone what also refers to the colour.

In one of my notes I wrote about origin of a name "butterfly" and one of them is connected with this species. Some people think it's very probable that this yellow b'flies were used to called "butter flies". The name Brimstone has been in use for over 300 years.

I'm sure you know these beauties well from many posts, so I'll write only some interesting facts:
-> adults of this species are one of the longest-lived butterflies. They appear in July, enter hibernation by mid-September, emerge in late spring the following year and may live even to July. It's quite impressive when you realize that some species of b'flies live as an adult form only few days.
-> these are the only Polish butterflies that don't seek any special shelter for winter. They spend the cold time in woodlands sleeping among dead leaves covering ground.
-> they like purple, nectar-rich flowers
-> in spring, males patrol the habitat searching for females. When a female is located both sexes spiral into the sky in a courtship flight before mating.

I know some of you don't like such shots. I mean with hands or fingers of photographer, but this was the only way to take shot of this fellow. Why?
Well, he found me in forest and landed on my arm.
I have no idea why, but he just didn't want to fly away all the time trying to sit on my clothes though I wasn't wearing anyting purple ;) So I just put my hand close to him and he sat on it. I could take as many shots as I wanted. Later I had to pick him and put on some plant because there wasn't any other way to get rid of him ;)

There are many b'flies living in my region and this fellows are no doubt one of the most brave. I have felling that sometimes they just don't pay any attention to the camera. Tasty nectar is much more interesting.

As I said photo have been taken in forest hence the circles of light in BG. I didn't have to use flash and I didn't want, so photo has a bit gloomy mood. Well, at least it's something different than almost every other shot of Lemon B'fly I have

Amazing mymetism, Monika ! Same ideea like the "stick insect" or the "algae sea horse" ... TFS
And I forgive the "sticky" fingers!

I don't think this image has a 'gloomy mood' at all. It's stunning, such detail. I could never take an image like this using one hand!
A great image, incredibly sharp, excellent pov.
Well done and thanks for sharing.

This is great Monika.
A beautiful little butterfly and you've captured it very well.
The light is great, and the detail is clear.
Its all good.
Cheers, Steve.

Excellent capture Monika.

Very nice colours, well blurred background and wonderful colours. The dof/sharpness is perfect setting the butterfly off nicely and showing plenty of details. Very good composition.

Monica, I think the light has improved this picture in some ways. I have never seen the fine texture of the wings brought out so nicely in a directly sunlit shot of this species, and here it is very interesting. I always think that the antennae of this species look very strange - on most butterflies they are fine, delicate things. On this one, they look very thick - most odd! I expect it was trying to find somewhere safe to hibernate. They are "programmed" to find evergreen vegetation for hibernation - maybe you were wearing the right colour?
Thanks, Nigel.

Monika, I like the gloomy mood. The point is I like dark photos :-)

Excellent sharpness, which is great, since one must consider you used only one of the hands.

Great pov and composition. Very nice details.
