It may be quite surprising, but I took this picture yesterday. I found this moth sitting on the door in my house. I have no idea what was it doing here at this time of year, but I'm glad I've found it.
I think it looks cute with these dark eyes and big feather-like antennae.

I don't know the ID though I think this look quite simmilar to some moths from Limantria species. So any help will be welcome (I post a picture of whole moth to WS).

As far as I know this is a male. You can say that looking at the antennae. They are equiped with elaborate side bristles what gives them look of feathers or ferns. Such antennae are thought to give the moth a particularly sharp sense of smell, so he can detect minute traces of females perfume.

-----------------------------------

Thanks to Nigel I have a correct ID. So this is a male of Pale Tussock moth (Calliteara pudibunda).

Hello Monika, some may think he is cute maybe others will think this is ugly :-) I'm pleased that you think for former as he has his qualities. I like the POV here and the lighting is pretty good too. In one way, with those antennae he does look a little like a demented rabbit :-)

Maybe that's why he was in your room, he had detected your perfume?

Very well done, thank you for posting.

Fantastic macro.

This is superb Monika. I thought it might have been a bat!! What a find, So are you going to mind him all winter, do they live that long and in the cold weather? Great macro, well done. TFS.

Great image Monika, very nice magnification with good contrast and sharpness. One of the best images featuring his antennae I've seen so far. TFS!

So you took a picture while I was visiting you, how cute...
:) I LOVE THIS! So cool, I wish this guy was a foot long and he could be my pet!

Could be Lymantria dispar (after seeing the WS), a known pest for apple trees. Are they some aplle trees or plum trees around your house?
Very nice the POV, giving a detailed sight of the antennae.

Regards, Petru

Monika bonjour, splendid shot on this moth. Colors that harmonize. Composition and sharpness are perfect. Very well done and happy new year Monika, Didier.

Hi Monika,
Excellent macro shot on this moth. Your flash did a good job here on the exposure. The colors and detail look great. Very interesting looking guy with what would be a winter coat on a mammal.
Scott

Very good sharpness, detail & exposure Monika. Very well composed and I like the curved surface I see that it's resting on.

Hallucinant!

La prise de vue est excellente et léclairage est parfait.

Félicitations pour la netteté.

Joseph.

Hi Monika
What a beautiful close up shot!! This butterfly looks like the little phantastic animal that we can see in the "Gremlins" movie! The light and colour are phantastic! Well done. Cheers
Quentin

Good to see your work again Monika, I really should spend more time on this site. This is stunning, the detail in the antennae is superb...well done.

Hi, Monika:
Been away for a while, or I would have picked this one up sooner. This is a male Pale Tussock Calliteara pudibunda, more famous for the outrageous caterpillar! This is a very late specimen, but I am 100% certain of the species. There's a nice series of pics here.
Have a very Happy New Year.
Nigel.

Hi Monika,
Catch up time again!!
Great capture, good detail and sharpness. Great POV, exposure and composition. As always, sweet and perfect.
I hope you had a good celebration for new Years. ;)
Thanks for posting, have a good week.

Perfect. This is a superb macro shot. Your POV and angle of approach making the most use of the limited DOF. Tack sharp and nice contrasts.
