Quite old picture, taken on early summer last year. I have quite many pictures of robber flies with prey and I just noticed I've never posted any. So here it is today.

The dagger in the title isn't there by accident.

Robber flies have short, strong proboscis used to stab their victims. These mouthparts very much resemble dagger and this impression is even emphasized by the fact that the fly usually stab the victim in a back of the head or thorax.
The "dagger" is used to inject to the victims body saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes which paralyze and digest the insides. After that the fly can suck the liquefied meal much like soda through a straw.

Hi Monika,
Soda through a straw will never seem the same again :-) The circle of life, it's not always pleasant but it's necessary. A great macro, I really like the soft green background, DOF is perfect, excellent detail and a grisly but informative note!
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Monika
Great macro photo and an excellent capture of the moment. This is the real life cycle of nature - kill or be killed. Only with most of nature it is with no other motivation than for survival through the food source.
Great composition, nice strong colours, good DOF with excellent details, superb BG, and spot-on exposure.
Very well done and TFS.

Hi Monika,
An excellent macro on this Robber Fly and his victim. Comp. and framing look very good. The exposure also looks very good with the nice saturated colors and sharp detail. DOF control was perfect here.

Great dramatic capture. The all green background really makes them stand out. Very good DOF.

Great work and TFS

Hello Monika, the Robber fly fascinates me. I seen them in Turkey last year and they just look so menacing. The fact that you caught him with prey really makes this rather special. Nice detail and compo. Well done.

Excellent shot well done.

Hi Monika!
Great action shot! Neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes sounds very interesting :-) Robberflies are fantastic killing machines, I like to observe them during action. Very good photo with fine details, composition and mood. Far better than my boring butterflies ;-)

Hi Monika,
I have a very busy couple of days. But I can make just enough time for a quick visit to TN.
