[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Mammy is a huge female of Raft Spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus).

They are known from making very large egg sacs. That's not very strange concerning the fact the spiders itself are very large. The females can reach over 2cm (without legs!). Stiil the size of the sac in comparision with the spider is preety impressive.

I don't have any picture where the size of this lady would be well visible, but as I estimated when I saw her, the egg sac she carried had about 1cm in diameter.

I've also seen a much bigger female that day. She didn't had a sac yet, but it was obvious she's "pregnant". Her abdomen was huge, probably swollen with eggs. She has over 2cm for sure and looked very impressive. We don't really have any big spiders in Poland, and this one was huge!
Unfortunatelly before I managed to get close enough for shot she run away into the water. Maybe I'll have another occasion someday.

The lady on my picture put her eggs to the sac already. Now she carries it. She hold it with her palps and, as you can see on the picture, she also have some silk fibers to attach the sac to her body.

When the time comes, the female will deposit the egg sac on a leaf and spin a protective silk around it. Later she open the egg sac slightly, and will be guarding it until her spiderlings emerge.

The BG of this shot is a mowed meadow covered with drying grass. The river where this spider live goes through farmer's meadows. Some of them are mowed, but fortunatelly many of them are too wet, so the farmers leave them in peace :-)
The light is warm because the shot have been taken in very late afternoon.

Very good picture. I love the lighting, sharpness and contrast with the BG. I wonder how heavy it is for her to carry that huge sac...eh well...nature's way :)
Horia

Hi Monika, super shot of mother and sac! Very impressive having to carry that around all day... Quite amazing how they do this, and as you say she has help with protective silk spun around it. Where is her head? On the right? Your notes are just so interesting to read. I never realised that this is how the eggs are looked after. Thank you,
Janice

Hi Monika!
Ruuuuun!!! Martians are coming! :-) Perfect creature, looking even better with this ball. Very World Cup photo :-) Very good quality, note and very interesting subject. Big one. I have got troubles with spiders photography, they always run fast when they spot me. BTW I read long time ago that if you want to capture butterflies you shouldn't use any perfumes or deodorants :-)

Another great capture Monika. You know with your gallery and those accompanying notes you could easily market a book which I am sure would be a seller. Very nice work.

Wow, what a spider ! It looks huge on your photo ! This sac seems to be quite heavy for the poor spider. Excellent sharpness and details, beautiful colors, excellent composition and POB, excellent DOF and BG. A perfect shot. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hi Monika,
Now this would look good rotated 90° :-) Excellent shot, technically everything is good, great detail and colours, perfect DOF. Great flash levels again, no hint of flash artifacts anywhere. A really interesting note too, I think it's very impressive that you write your own notes rather than take them from a website, you have very good knowledge of your subjects. A great Biology lesson for me too! Great work.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Monika,
Nature guarantees continuity for many many ways, and you show us today one of the heavier way possible! It must be interesting to see what happens when the sac will opens,...

What a fascinating shot, Monika. : )
I have never actually seen a spider with an egg sac, and this one is huge.
The mother spider looks so funny. She almost has to stand on her tip toes to accommodate the height of the sac.
Amazing POV and details. Great colors and light.
TFS. : )

Hi Monika,
This wonderful picture magnificiently completes your Dolomedes series. I see you and these impressive spiders have become friends ; I hope you also will come to get an eyesight on their small offsprings once they hatch (and then I hope you will have your camera with you). I like your notes, you really know how to share your passion. And then you remark on the smallest details perfectly illustrated in your photos, like the small thread securely fitting the sac to the spiders body ! We are with you at that small pond ! Thanks ! Hello Monika, excellent capture with a great POV and DOF. I like the position of this spider with these long legs and his large eggs sac. Very well done and congratulations, Didier.

HI Monika,
this one is so interesting, I love to see this spider with the sack with the babies. A wonderful moment, thanks for sharing.
In these warm and sunny days I'm not so often here on TN, it's a little sad to miss all the good shots. Bye
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Hello Monika, why is it the further east you go the bigger the bugs get, thats one thing I have noticed since moving to Sweden. Must say thought the bugs you have seem even bigger.

Very nice work and wow what an ugly looking spider but great for the camera.... :-)
