Fibla maclachlani

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Back from the Spain/Portugal/Morocco trip:
This was a chance encounter with a 20 mm long female Square headed snake fly (Raphidioptera; Inocelliidae; Fibla maclachlani Albarda 1891; Eckige Kamelhalsfliege) im Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede/ Portugal.
ID: not so sure. There are about 75 species of snake flies in Europe, many of them in Southern Europe. The family of Inocelliidae is characterized by: no ocelli, wing stigma only crossed by a longitudinal vein. The square head speaks in favor of the genus Fibla, the dark legs for the mentioned species. I will have to verify with H. Aspöck, 1980. Die Neuropteren Europas.
Technique: Compact camera, "emergency shot" without flash, uuugghh . |

Guten Morgen Dieter,

Hi Dietrich,
A very nice record of this impressive, little beast. Here's where the compact camera's inherent depth of field is a plus, as almost the whole insect is in good focus.

Hello Dietrich!
Nice to see your new picture from new trip :) Snake flies are very rare objects in TN gallery. Picture is nice for watching but in the note I think there is a small mistake - the name of order should be Raphidioptera :) (lack of R :>).
Greetings,
Radomir
