Madeira.

Morning view from the mountain path between Madeira's highest peaks Pico de Arieiro and Pico Ruivo, at an elevation of approx. 1800m.

Looking to the north east, down to canyons and laurisilva forest.

Having posted to TN some butterfly pictures from Madeira, I think time has come to show a glimpse of the scenery of the island. A one time volcanic island, emerging some 4 Millions years ago out of the Atlantic ocean, Madeira has never had any connection to the mainland. Morocco is about 700 km away, Portugal even 1000 km. The biodiversity of vegetation that has developed in Madeira during that relatively short period of time is amazing, and so is the number of species endemic to the island. The evergreen Laurisilva forest that covers the humid northern parts of the island is a relict from tertiary European and North Africa. A large number of trees and plants, extinct in Europe since the Ice Age, have found a retreat on the island, with today's closest relatives quite often to be found as far away as Northern India.

The peaks in the centre of the island are usually hidden away in thick clouds for the whole year. You have to be there in late summer, get up early and still be lucky to have a clear view like that. But even so, due to the morning haze you cannot see the sea in the few miles distance the view is going to.

The picture was taken on September 3, 2005, at 09:28 GMT, with a light and small pocket digital camera:
Nikon CoolPix 4600, 2288x1712, sRGB, 8mm, F/5.4, 1/85sec, ISO-50. Picture resized to the web.

Hope you enjoy the view.
Have a very nice day.

Hello Peter,

You speak to my heart with this beautiful image, wonderful mountain peaks and green lush forests.

An excellent POV, exposure, and colors in this amazing scene, a pity the ocean couldn't be seen, however, the morning mist does add a lovely sense of intrigue to the view.

An exceptional posting and note, thank you for sharing Peter!

ps, I just found the ws, a great bonus :-)
thank you again!

Very nice picture taken for a pocket digital camera.
To bad for the haze, would have make a fine picture.

Hi Peter,
Fantastic capture of beautiful mountain view,
perfect exposure, so the details are excellent,
very nice composition with good depth,
Thanks for sharing!

Another great shot from the tiny Nikon! Reminds me of a similar eroded gorge on Lanzarote near a site where I often fly - breeding Ravens and Barbary Falcons, but very few butterflies!
Thanks, Nigel.

Hi Peter,
I'm still very busy, so have no time for a longer visit to TN.
Very good capture, and as always good details, colours, sharpness and composition.
Thanks for posting, have a great week.

What an incredible vista! It makes me wish I had wings. Excellent composition and exposure.

Hi Peter
This is a well composed and lovely landscape with an excellent view. I just love the layers of mountain that seems to go on forever. Very good DOF for a f/5.4 exposure setting. Great colours and a high mark for the adventure factor.
Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Peter.
its a beautiful view. The composition and POV are great.
I like the deep in the picture.
Nice colours and good details.
Very well done.

Hi Peter,
This is one well composed landscape shot. Great distribution of the working layers: the V shaped FG leaves space in the middle for the various layers, ending with the misty far BG.

Regards, Petru

Hello Peter,
Great atmosphere and scenic image. The angle that this photo is taken allows the viewer to trek through the walls of this gorge to the mountains in the background.
Could be sharpened slightly, or use F 8-11-- Very Nice...

Hello again,
one more nice atmospherical photo, wonderful foggy effect and air perspective.
Best regards,
Elena

Beautiful view! I have only visited Funchal, and did not dare to take a tour, as I have heard the roads were terrible. But after having seen your beautiful picture, I think I have to dare, next time...

Hi Peter,
I am a landscape lover, so that's why I returned to one of your earlier photos. This one is just beautiful with the fog in the distance and the sharp edged mountians. The colors are very good and I love the POV.
TFS,
Niek

Peter,

Very interesting landscape. It's beauty is shown by your good Composition and lighting. TFS,
Sheriff

My Dear! I like the rocky Madeira.

Glad to see a landscape and habitat that gives us a better idea of the local where you find your beasties!
