A medium-sized, fairly robust damselfly. Females have broader abdomen than males, and more extensive black, with yellow bands "between" abdominal segments. There are three forms of female showing varying amounts of black on the abdomen.
Is known as "Large red damselfly" in english.
The wingspan amounts to 35 to 50 mm, with a body length from 30 to 40 mm.
Common at ponds, canals and lakes and surrounding habitat.
One of the earliest damselfly to emmerge, usually in early April. Emergence often begins in April in good seasons and the flight period usually extends until August.
A widespread and common species, often found far from water. One finds it to small waters and slowly flowing brooks. Also moorige pools are preferred. Thereby a close onshore vegetation is important since it sits rarely freely, but always hides itself in the vegetation. This is also the reason, why the early "Large Red Damselfly" is not seen so frequent despite their frequent occurrence and the red colouring.
The "Large Red Damselfly" is found in many habitats, from garden ponds and ditches, to lakes, tarns and acid moorland pools and flushes.
The male and female remain "in tandem" whilst the females descends just below the water surface to lay eggs into aquatic plants.
The larval stage lasts two years.

Hello Paulo,
Very please to my eyes. Crisp clear and sharp all over. Congratulations.

Very good colours, I liked the compo, it is 'reach' with great colours, very good pose.
The yellow spots are little bit bright to my taste.

Dear Paulo, this is another nice picture of P. nymphula posted in the last days. See the picture of Filipe Caetano (firelord) which also shows the vivid green/red contrast. In your picture the green appears freshly spring-like. The smooth background, although also green, leaves the outline of the fern leafs brilliantly clear. This is (partially) reasoned by the sharpness of the plant and the insect in the foreground.

SO crisp and vivid it almost looks as if it is sitting on top of the picture. Spetacular.

Hi Paulo,
Very nice capture!
Very good color, light and detail!
Great work :)

What a beauty, Paulo!
In addition to the excellent POV, DOF, colours and sharpness, I love those blurred yellow spots in the BG.
Well done, my friend.

Hi Paulo,
that picture of a damselfly is of outstanding beauty.
Details on the insect and the fern are just superb,
and the amazingly rich and subtle colours are delightful.
Not also the insect is taken in a perfect and wonderful way, but also the plant provides a prefect framing with its delightfully curled soft coloured leaves. The distant, colourful background adds to a result of utmost perfection. Congratulations, my friend, and thank you for that outstanding contribution!
Best regards,

Hi Paulo.
Good detail, colours and sharpness. exposure and lighting are good. Good POV and framing.

Thanks for posting, have a great week.

Hi Paulo!
Nice to see new photo from you! Very nice damselfly, good colours and POV. Composition with young fern is excellent. Note very interesting.

Hello Paulo,
Good to see a post from you again!
This is very beautiful picture. I love the colours here, the sharpness is amazing too. The leaf of the fern looks great.
I think the damselfly is a too centered though. I would want to see a little stronger compositon.
Overall, very well done on this one!

Hi Paulo, this is very good. Nice and sharp, good colours and details. Well done,

Saludos amigo PAULO.......RICARDO.

Hola Paulo.
Saudos.

The Fuji has done well again. The contrast between th ered body and the green fern is very good. Excellent composition. Good sharpness and POV.

This is sooo well done!
The colours are so vibrant... the bee so great!
Superb DOF and the composition around the subject is very well done...
thanks Ana:)
