It is summer now. Temperature is over 30 degrees Celsius and most Tampa mountain clearings are covered with grass.

I was surprised to see, in the sea of grass, a white spot. Getting closer I saw it was Dianthus spiculifolius Schur. It is a beautiful and delicate species of Dianthus, endemism of Carpathian mountains. Flowers are white emitting pleasant perfume. Leaves are slim and placed in pairs on the stem, most of them at the base of the plant. There is only one flower on each stem but growing one near the other are forming small bushes.

It is abundant on the calcareous regions of the mountains but populations are declining. Therefore it is mentioned in various Red Lists of rare and vulnerable Romanian flora species.

Hello Cristian,
How interesting to see these Dianthus flower rather similar to our native species that I just posted. These are very beautiful! A very fine sharp capture and I like the dark background. Very interesting note too!

Hello Cristian!
When I was in Romania I had possibilities to watch many different Dianthus species, but they were usually red/pink coloured, never white! And moreover their shapes were totally different too. This is very unique species (at least for me :>).
