Name: Nigritella rubra
Family: Orchidaceae

This is a rare (and protected) orchid in my country.
The romanian name of this orchid would be translated in english as "brave man's blood".
It is an alpine orchid, groing only above the forest line, in the alpine meadows of the calcarous mountains.
It can't be found in every romanian mountain massive, only insular, on some favuorable spots.
It has (like any alpine flower) a small size, rarely growing over 10 cm high. Blooms in July-August, the flowers being small, clustered and having a strong pleasant vanilla odour.
A remarkably physical feature of all Nigritella species is that they do not have the ovary rotated at 180 degrees, like all other european orchids have.
Therfore a close-up look at the tiny flower will show a upside-down distribution and shape of the tepals like in other orchids.

Hello Petru the that intense red color as this represents certain grade of difficulty of capturing for my for its pink and blued reflections. This species is new for my and very interesting for its multiple petals and it forms so special. The detail of the leaf of the shaft and their red color give an exquisite touch to the composition. Saludos Cordiales. *Ninfa Urania*

Lovely shot Petru!
The picture is very clear. The colours and simple composition make it very pleasant to look at.
In Poland it is called darkheaded orchid. I like the romanian name much more.
Very well done on this one!

Hi Petru
What a lovely terrestrial orchid. Typical with these small orchids the inflorescence is really crowded with all the little individual flowers.
Your composition, cropping & POV are all well done and the BG & DOF is fabulous.
Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Beautiful capture, Petru. I like the contrast between the hot red/magenta and the greens. The centralized framing fits well.

Zeca
