On the fencing that screens the birds from the visitors to a hide we saw this Shrike.

Balearic Woodchat Shrike, Lanius senator badius

Swedish name: Balearisk Rödhuvad törnskata

The male and female are similar but I take this to be a male. Another view of another individual is shown in the WORKSHOP.

This is the smallest species of Shrike, being slightly smaller that the European starling.
It is regarded as a Balearic subspecies of the Woodchat Shrike that is found in S. Europe and the Anatolian peninsula. The differences are slight.

It nests in dense bushes and spends the winter in tropical Africa

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 8 meters (26 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened using the unsharp mask mode and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hi Ivan.
What a clear and nice picture of a very cute species of shrike. I have not meet such birds in our region. Subject is simply sweet. Bird on a fence is looked amazingly. I also am impressed with clean fine colours of the bird' feathers, superb sharpness of the image and pleasant sun lighting and blue sky. Thanks a lot and best wishes.

Hola Ivan

Bella composición de esta imagen, con colores y momento muy adecuados.

Un saludo de Antonio

Hello Ivan,
I love watching shrikes they have such attitude. They are difficult to shot and you have done well here on this beautiful shrike. We have the Loggerhead and Northern Shrike here and they are very similar and hard to distinguish apart. Thank you for sharing this lovely image.

Bonjour Ivan,
A fine and interesting picture also from a photographical point of view. Love the way you present your shot, the Woodchat Shrike in a decentred position and on this graphical fence. The pose of the bird is ideal and it has a lovely catch-light in its eye. The blue sky is a perfect contrast to this lovely scene. Well done, indeed!
Bonne semine ŕ vous deux

Hi Ivan
That species is unknown to North Americans. What a beautiful pose of that bird who turned just in time to be photographed, just like a top model. The colors are beautiful, the details very sharp and a good eye contact. The subject ands ou perfectly against that deep blue sky.

Hello Ivan
nice bird, great POV from the back showing his beautiful plumage, lovely pose with head turned, wonderful details and blue BG
Have a good night

Una obra de arte. Bien combinada la técnica con tus habilidades
cretivas en la composición y el encuadre. Equilirio en el conjunto
y una pose del ave muy atractiva. Excelente trabajo Ivan: Josep Ignasi.

Hello Ivan,

A fine point of view and an interesting pose by the bird!
The look over the shoulder shows that the bird has full control of what is going on behind hehehe...
A pleasant composition, good details in the subject!

Hello Ivan,
a very graphic view of the bird sitting on the wooden posts. Exciting slight glance that gives a special beauty and attraction.
The lighting is so good and the blue sky is so special.
nicely composed to give a wonderful presentation.

Hello Ivan.
I don't get to see colorful shrike like this one around my backyard. We only have plain brown shrike in abundance. I like how the bird animates in a frame against the spotless blue sky. The bamboo-like fence creates pleasant view in the frame. Lovely details of the plume with the head-turn.
Kind regards.
