Different stages of the monarchs butterfly life.
The eggs are laid on a specific plant the caterpillar feeds on.
I cannot say exactly how long it takes before the change because there
were lots of them in different sizes, but it must be around 2 weeks.
Then it takes about 10 days I think before the butterly comes out.
The chrysalid shown is at it's last day before the butterfly emerges.
You can see the colours of the wings through the envelope.
Unfortunately I missed the coming out as it was sunday morning and woke up at 9. The procedure of drying up lasted 2 hours before the
butterfly could fly away.
The chrysalid looks very nice, with little golden points on it.

I used the macro function of my little Samsung to make these pictures.

Salut Karin,
I am so happy to see you back. : )
I have not been very active lately, but I do enjoy coming on TN to look at the beautiful pictures or saying hello to friends when time and energy permit.
So what a great surprise to see you here!
Monarchs happen to be one of my favourite subjects, as they do come to hibernate in tall eucalyptus groves in our area. Not to mention that they are just gorgeous.
Your montage is a wonderful presentation of the Monarch's life cycle. Each and every one of those pictures are well done, but my favorite is the one showing the colors of the wings showing through the thin shell of the gold-studded, jade-colored chrysalid.
But maybe my favorite is the one showing the new butterfly emerging from the chrysalid. Great images!
TFS and talk to you soon. : )

Bien cordialement, Albert

Bonsoir Karin,
Superbe composition didactique sur ce superbe papillon que je n'ai rencontré qu'à l'automne dernier pour la première fois. Les couleurs et la forme de la chrysalide sont vraiment surprenantes. Merci pour ce beau travail.
Amicalement,
Catherine
