The prairie dogs get their name from their habitat and their cry of alarm, like barking dog. Online Etymology Dictionary According to the word was used as early in the year 1774. Reports of the expedition of Lewis and Clark indicate that both came in September 1804 to an animal population by the French call "prairie dogs" The scientific name Cynomys "in Greek means 'dog rodent', motivated by the gender of rodents and the barking emitted during fights hierarchical.

These are not Cynomys (Prairie Dogs) of western North America, but Meercats (Species: Suricata suricatta). "The meerkat or suricate, Suricata suricatta, is a small mammal belonging to the mongoose family. Meerkats live in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola, and in South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang" or "clan". A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats, but some super-families have 50 or more members. In captivity, meerkats have an average life span of 12–14 years, and about half this in the wild." Quote taken from Wikipedia. TFS.
