[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The ant Camponotus cruentatus is one of the most conspicuous ants in "Los Alcornocales" Natural Park in the south of Spain. Large and noble, with its distinctive rufous gaster, is perhaps one of the most photographed ant in the region because its spectacularity and relative ignorance of the photographer (not as the Camponotus barbaricus, that sometimes make fast attacks when detecting the hand or camera). In this image of a series of several magnifications and frames, a group of ants in a circle around the center of the image is carrying a small caterpillar to the nest. The antennae are touching the center of their interest... What can sense an ant when touching the surface of a prey? The same as me when smelling "Jamón Serrano"? I do not know. These existentialist and fundamental questions are above my knowledge. The main subject is perhaps the ant in the upper side that was the one I tried to keep in focus with slight movements of the camera. This series of images were made with a Nikon D70, with a 105 mm macro lens and some extension rings. Illumination was that of the sunlight and an SB21 flash. |

Dear Carlos!
As the entomologist I like to watch macros presenting different species of insects. And I really like a good quality pictures. And this one is very good, also as a documentary photo! Great timing (ants at "work"), very good low POV, and fantastic DOF. I especially like details on ant's head!
Very well done!
TFS and best greetings from Lodz,
Radomir
