Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus)
Swedish name: Styltlöpare

We visited a hide, one of several, at the Albufera Marsh reserve that is famous for its nesting birds, including the Black-winged Stilt. This nest was only about 3 meters from the hide, so close that I had difficulty in composing the shot to include all the bird, resulting in a small exclusion of the tip of this female’s wings.

Hides are a real aid to bird photography.

The Black-winged Stilt is a relatively common wader in the countries around the Mediterranean, where it arrives in the early spring after overwintering in Africa. It also occurs in Asia and Australia.

The female as seen here tends to have less black on the head and neck and the back has a brownish tinge instead of that of the male. She is arranging the eggs to make sure that the pointed end is directed inwards and to turn them a little.

It is interesting to note the shape and markings of wader’s eggs. For camouflage purposes they all have similar markings and they tend to be very pointed at one end to facilitate laying as they are relatively large compared to the size of the body. Usually four eggs are laid with the points arranged inwards so that the wader can cover the eggs with its body during brooding. The male and female take turns in brooding the eggs, see WORKSHOP showing the male.

Both images are only slightly cropped to improve the composition a little and after size reduction they were slightly sharpened.

Hi Ivan. You were able to get a good close up of the Black-winged Stilt with its eggs. Being so close lets us see all the markings on the four eggs. You have captured the feathers with fine detail and all with natural colours. Would it have helped if you have taken the 1.4 converter off. To put the bird just a tad further away. Well done TFS.

Hello Ivan,
Superb composition. Excellent POV, DOF and sharpness. Excellent natural colours.
Best regards Siggi

Well, this is pure nature at its best Ivan, the brightly coloured Stilt and the perfectly camouflaged eggs form a good counterpoint in this finely exposed and sharply focused image taken from the best possible vantage point. The second image and your concise notes complete this posting superbly, TFS them my friend.

Hi Ivan,

This is one of those once in a lifetime shots. I am so glad you captured this stilt so perfectly. If any of the wing is missing it isn't noticeable. I'm not sure which I find more exciting - the bird, the nest, or the eggs. I've never seen such a clear view of bird's eggs before. Pose, colors, details are all marvelous. When I had my S5 I can't tell you how many times the converter was on when I didn't want it and it wasn't on when I needed it and no time to correct the situation.

As I mentioned yesterday, your holiday seems to have gone off very well,my dear friend Ivan.
I love the really close distance(I know there's some technical jargon for that)that you've got here.
The clarity and depth that has brought to this shot is really amazing!

Wow, Ivan... What a great intimate shot of this stilt tending its eggs.
The nest is so precarious at the edge of the water.
Very sharp details... and the white is nicely balanced.
Our stilts look a little different, as we have the black-necked type.
I wonder if ours have similar eggs and nests.
TFS. : )

Hello Ivan,
It's like a window open on the intimacy of this couple. Amazing to see the posture of the female preparing the disposition of the eggs to brood them.
You had a perfect point of view to show us this most interesting moment.
Excellent and so natural!
Un grand merci
Meilleures salutations à vous deux

Merhaba Ivan,
çok özel bir an ve çok güzel bir kompozisyon.
Netlik ve kadraj çok başarılı.

Hi Ivan,

I agree, a hide is the way to go with birds, when possible. A fine shot, excellent detail and sharpness, and I like that the bird is going about its daily routine rather than just posing.

Hi Ivan.
Now thats a hide with a view.
You couldn't get any closer could you?
Ecellent detail on those eggses.
Great capture of the Stilt turning her eggs.
Cheers & TFS

Hi Ivan.
Simply outstanding in every aspect shot. I am impressed with achieved 3D-effect, fantastic sharpness and details of the scene and precise exposure. Magnification level is unbelievable (I feel myself in the nest too). Diagonal composition of the image is also perfect. Great true wild nature bird shot. My congratulations.
