Annulus (mycology)

An annulus is the ring like structure sometimes found on the stipe of a mushroom. The annulus represents the remaining part of the partial veil, after it has ruptured to expose the gills or other spore-producing surface. An annulus may be thick and membranous, or it may be cobweb-like. The latter type of annulus is referred to as a cortina. An annulus may be persistent and be a noticeable feature of a mature mushroom, or it may disappear soon after the emergence of the mushroom, perhaps leaving a few remnants on the stipe as an "annular zone". For edible species of mushroom, this is widely regarded as the tastiest part.

An annulus can be any of various shapes, which can be important in identification of the mushroom:

* pendant - drooping or skirt-like
* flaring - spreading outward from the stipe
* sheathing - opening upwards around the stipe

Great view of this delightful fungi with its little brothers just begining to popup next to it. Good note too. Good diffuse flash and DOF. Beautifully highlighted on that green background.

Ok, en el 2005 andaba ssuelto por ahí, fotografiando hongos y haciendo magia con una camara compacta!... ciertamente!
Bella foto, un POV muy ingenioso, y un uso del flash perfecto; inclusive el BG ha resultado un complemento ideal; lo mismo digo del bien seleccionado recorte en vertical.

A very interesting note going with a very fine shot. I like the point of view you have chosen to explain perfectely what is the Annulius. The fine green and brown tints of the shot are pleasant too and the vertical framing well chosen.

such a splendid sharpness showing the gills in excellent clarity.
This low angle shot really depict the excitement of a fungi. Feel like an ant crawling near the place, looking up and see the big capt and blurry green leaves behind.
