While walking through the fishing village of EL Golfo we came upon a flower border that not only was visited by many Painted Lady butterflies, but also by insects that behaved rather like Bee Flies by hovering a few centimetres above the flowers before darting away to settle briefly on a flower.

This shot shows that it is not at all a fly but a species of bee.

After some research I came to the conclusion that this is a species of solitary or mining bee belonging to the genus Anthophora. They have the ability to hover and fly fast.

It took some time to achieve this shot as these bees are very active. A more specific ID would be appreciated.

This shot was taken at a distance of two meters and the camera hand-held.

This image is heavily cropped and has been sharpened.

Hi Ivan.
How perfect you have reproduced white and black colours of the bee. Great precise work. At whole your picture is excellent too. Amazing lighting, superb details, exact DOF and nice composition. TFS and regards.

Hi, Ivan.
Nice macro. Sharp, good exposure and unknown interesting species for my eye.

Nice caption, Ivan!
I guess it is a solitary bee.
The black and white stripes on its body look very attractive. I shot a solitary bee in India this summer which had black and blue stripes on it, but the picture was so quite OOF I did not dare to post it here.
A well compose shot with fine details and natural colours.

Hi Ivan,
it's wonderful, what a pretty and sharp shot with sunny colours, I like it, thanks

The sharpness, exposure, and colors are amazing! You have a great eye for composition also.

Hi Ivan,
I was really intrigued by this excellent pic, not just for its perfection but also because of the bee species completely unknown to me. A check with Google (www.earthlife.net) brought to light a picture of Anthophora kaufmanni that fits very well. But I found no information on this species. Does it occur where you found yours? Are there other similar species? Size?
Thanks for sharing, Dietrich

very very sharp and nice ; and I like titles with humour I can undersand ;-)
