Erithacus rubecula

14 cm; wing-span 20–22 cm. 15–20% smaller than Nightingale. Small, robust chat, with rather large head and fat chest. Grey to brown above, with warm brown tail; face and chest diagnostically drenched orange-buff to rufous-chestnut above dull white body. Juvenile brown above and buff below, copiously spotted pale buff.
Adult unmistakable in good view but liable to suggest other small chats (e.g. nightingales, Red-flanked Bluetail) in brief glimpse or in spotted juvenile plumage. Flight usually low and flitting, with quick turns and dives amongst and into cover. Stance usually rather upright, with bold head carriage, prominent chest, and frequently flicked wings and tail. Uses both short and long hops in quick succession, movement characteristically interrupted by pauses and wing- and tail-flicks. Pugnacious. British race melophilus tame (seemingly addicted to human habitation and affection), but paler continental races noticeably wilder and more skulking, this behaviour persisting on migration and in winter quarters.

Invertebrates, especially beetles and (in southern Spain at least) ants; also fruit and seeds in winter. Uses 2 main methods to locate prey: (1) perching on bush or low branch, flying down to eat prey, then returning to perch (may fly up to c. 20 m to pick up tiny insect); (2) hopping on ground, but usually not turning over leaves, etc. In woodland, thus depends primarily on animals moving on surface of litter layer, but also sometimes takes prey from tree-trunk, branch, or leaf, and occasionally catches items in the air. When ground frozen, will accompany Pheasant, mole, man, etc., to feed at areas where hard surface broken; also (when no frost) will feed on ground disturbed by mole tunnelling beneath; well-known habit of accompanying digging gardeners presumably an extension of this. Takes fruit either perched or, frequently, with rapid flight sally

Europe: laying begins April. Central Europe: laying from end of April to late July. Scandinavia: from very end of April in south but not before mid- or late May in north. FSU: from mid-May to mid-June in north; from mid-April in south. 2 broods, rarely 3, except in north of range where normally 1.
Average 13.7 days; slightly longer in March–April (14.0 days) than in May–June (13.5 days).
Average 13.4 days (10–18).

Bonjour Jose Ramon,
Ton rouge gorge est magnifiquement expressif. Les épines du gnêt sur lequelles il se tient donnent une bonne échelle à l'image. La lumière très douce met l'oiseau en valeur, surtout sur ce beau fond bleu. Très réussi.

Hi Jose
Very nice shot, great OOF buckgrund and pretty good sharpnes. I think that you coul remove the branches and grass from the right side of the picture.
Best wishes

Hola Hose Ramon,
Excellent capture of a Robin in an open situation. This is sharp with fine BG and interesting pose. I might have removed the grass on the right: it is alittle distracting and does contribute to the shot.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Jose,

Lovely, lovely picture of the sweet looking robin. The colors and details are right on. Our robins are so much different than yours - not nearly as delicate looking.

Good to see a bird picture from you, Jose. It is apparent that you are equally effective in this kind of photography too.
The bird looks beautiful from your perspective. Very sharp focus and natural colours.

Cordiales saludos... Ricardo

Hi Jose

This is another wonderful capture from you!
I really like the way you managed to capture this little robin. The light on him is simply terrific and it made all the colors look more vivid and stronger. The pose of the little fellow here is outstanding and the fact that you’ve caught it in a no-branch section of a tree was very fortunate because this was you managed to get a lovely blurred BG behind him.
Good sharpness and composition as well.

Bravo and TFS

Mucha salud
Jose Luis.

Beautifull shot nice sharp detail background is lovely the slight blue tinge helps to make the bird contrast. Good composition a job well done TFS rgds Necip.

Beautiful capture of the european robin Jose.
Superb light has captured the birds' beauty and colours very well.
Great composition and OOF background is also superb.
Well done.
