Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella).
Swedish name: Gulsparv

On our way to the southern tip of Öland we stopped to photograph birds from the car. During the spring and autumn this part of Öland is famous for its birds and is visited by birdwatchers from all over Sweden and other parts of Europe.

The Yellowhammer is much less common than it used to be, mainly because of loss of habitat caused by modern agriculture. It needs undisturbed low growth for nesting on the ground.

The female has much less yellow and is more heavily streaked.
It is resident in most of Europe, but absent from the Mediterranean area and a summer visitor to more northerly parts
It nests on the ground and the eggs are curiously marked with squiggly dark lines that look as though they are some kind of writing but serve as camouflage.

The song is quite characteristic, sounding in English like 'A little bit of bread and no cheeeeeeese!' In Swedish it is interpreted like counting up to seven, the seven being drawn out to 'sjuuuuuuuu'. For me the song of the Yellowhammer is a part of spring and early summer.

This was taken at a distance of about 5 meters. After light cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened a little

Shrubby Cinquefoil (Potentilla fructicosa).
Swedish name: Ölandstok
The yellowhammer is perched on the top of this shrub next to its yellow flower.

Though it is common on the island of Öland, it is the only occurrence in the wild in Sweden. It is found in other parts of Europe where the soils are rich in lime and moist. Varieties are often cultivated in gardens and parks.

Nice shot, a bit harsh light maybe, but what can you, I'd be happy too if i had made this one!! Maybe crop it so the bird is a little less centered if you have the space available on the original?

Have a nice weekend

Hi Ivan. This is a bird we used to see a lot of but i have not seen one for a few years. This is a nice POV in the shrub. You have taken this with fine detail and warm looking colours. I like the way the flower matches the feather colours along with the BG . Well done TFS.

You and Ulla have a nice weekend.

hello Ivan

excellent close-up photo of the Yellowhammer
with very fine POV, DOf and framing, the focus
to the bird and the foreground is superb
and with giving great sharpness and details
to the bird's beautiful plumage, the yellow flower it is
matching superbly with the bird and its yellow toned plumage,
and the very small catch-light render the photo

Really nice capture of this beautiful little yellowhammer, the colours are stunning with excellent detail in the plumage.

Framing and composition all good and its well isolated from the OOf background, and that single yellow flower just adds to the overall image, great shot,

Hi Ivan.
Once more extraordinary bird picture. Scene is simply sweet. Birdy and twigs can't be more beautiful. Magnification level is stunning as well as colours, sharpness of the main subject and pleasant blurriness of the BG. My greetings and best wishes. Have a nice weekend.

Thank you for your kind words on my 900th picture, Ivan.
Despite periodic upheavals on TN, it has been a wonderful experience to be here and interacting with like-minded people from all over the world through the medium of nature photography.

This is a very handsome bird with lovely colours on it. The natural illuminates the bird beautifully and you have done a great job of using it to the best possible effect.

Thanks for sharing the picture and all the best.

The shot is perfect. The composition, DOF, angle, colours...
You made a very goor work.

Hi Ivan,
A cool capture of this Yellowhammer, considerately nestling alongside this ranunculusish looking flower (the leaves don't look quite so ranunculusy but the flower somewhat resembles a buttercup.
Anyway,a beautiful shot.
Cheers & TFS

Hi Ivan

Great capture, perfect composition for these two yellow subjects. They stand out really well on the OOF background.

A real beauty Ivan,
Excellent Detail, DOF and color. Love the blurred BG. Great photo!!
I see you are using the Canon 1.4 converter with your 300MM f4 lens. I have a Canon 2X converter and occasionally use it on my 200MM f2.8 lens and am thinking of exchanging it for a 1.4. I'm just not happy with the results of the 2X.
Your combination seem to be doing a fine job. TFS.

Hallo Ivan
Now this is surely a bird that can be associated with many things: Summer, sunshine, happiness, joy and many more. The bright yellow of this bird’s plumage is stunning and very catching. I like the black stripes across the head. You have captured this vividly coloured bird in a great pose, showing nice details of the chest and facial feathers as well as the beautiful eye and the soft pearl coloured beak. The shape of the beak reminds me a lot of a goose's beak, in small scale of course. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hello Ivan !
What alovely little bird you have captured here ! What I like most here is the colors - greyish green all over, just the yellow bid and the yellow flower standing out, making the most beautiful contrast. Amazing details, splendid composition, excellent POV and wonderful pose of the bird. Very well done !

Hello Ivan,

A very attractive bird and an excellent, sharp, colorful image of it, nicely composed too.

A superb shot, Ivan...I love the delicate yellow flower, that makes the yellowhammer look almost regal!
A superb composition, and a lovely note!

Hello Ivan,
Great photography, displays an almost poetic composition. My congratulations on the excellent management approach and the ideal background blur. The colors are full and natural. Contact with the eye of the bird is fairly accurate. Congratulations.

Good job!
