Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus).
Swedish name: Strandskata, meaning ‘shore magpie’

This Oystercatcher was taken from the car just north of the southern tip of the island of Öland. During the spring and autumn this part of Öland is famous for its birds and is visited by birdwatchers from all over Sweden and other parts of Europe.

Oystercatchers belong to a wader family, Haematopodidae, which means red-legged, though only this species has bright red legs, while the other species have pink or greyish legs,
The number of species is uncertain throughout the world, depending on whether they are classified as species or sub-species but it seems to be between 10 and 12. They are either pied, like this one, or totally black and they all have long straight red bills.

They are noisy; making loud ‘pip-peep’ calls when they feel threatened or often in flight. Like all waders they are ground-nesting, often far from water in fields and meadows, though the eggs are coloured to resemble beach sand, where they also nest.

They feed on worms and insects and some develop the skills of opening hard shells like oysters.

They arrive in Sweden in March and leave in September to overwinter along the coasts of W. Europe, the Mediterranean and N. Africa

This was taken at a distance of about 10 meters (33 ft.). After slight cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Hello Ivan,
Excellent capture, fantastic sharpness and good depth of field, lovely colors and clarity, very good details and nice catchlight.
Best regards Siggi

The Oystercatcher looks angry at something, Ivan.
Look at that wide open beak, as if rebuking someone :).
The picture is well taken from a sizable distance with your 300mm fitted with a Converter.
Well done and thanks.

Hi Ivan,
wow...this bird is really going out of its throat.
The red eye is captivating and the reddish beak stands out well from the greenish background. you have created a very narrow depth, which enhances the the clarity and promote the beauty excellenly.

regards,
Foozi

Hi Ivan. It looks as if the Oystercatcher has a lot to shout about. Good timing to catch it with its mouth wide open. Once again you have taken it with fine detail and bright natural colours. The red of the eye and bill show up well. I like your low POV at eye level with the bird. Well done TFS.
Nick..

You and Ulla Have a nice weekend.

I can almost hear it your image shouts so loud:-) Tres' neat Ivan....just your average day...I wonder how one can tell a noise from a yawn..or do birds yawn:-)???

Bonito documento y además para mí ya que nunca había visto este ave. Excelente control de la luz y bien captado el ojo.
Saludos Ivan.
