[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In the North the Swedish roadsides are wide and have a broad v-shaped cross section to accommodate the snow cleared by snow ploughs. In the summer these areas are often covered with wild flowers.

On our way to our destination in the Swedish Mountains, we stopped occasionally when the sun shone and where the roadside had lots of flowers. Once we not only saw some butterflies but my son spotted a Longhorn Beetle that we both had never seen before.

We took several shots of what turned out to be ( Brachyta interrogationis), a species of Longhorn that occurs in C, N and E Scandinavia but is more common in the North. It is sometimes found above the tree-line. This one was about 1.5 cm (0.6 in) long.

In Swedish it is called Större Frågeteckenbock, which means Larger Question mark Longhorn. The markings look rather like question marks, which explain why Linnaeus named it so in 1758. There is a related slightly smaller species.

There are over 120 species of Longhorn (Cerambycidae) in Scandinavia, most of which are dependent on wood and many of which are rare. This species is not regarded as common but can be locally numerous and it is not dependent on wood.

In Scandinavia and central Europe both the larvae and the adults are dependent on Wood Cranesbill (Geranium sylvaticum), the adults eating the flower petals while the larvae feed on the roots. This photo shows it on the leaf of its host plant.
(Source: Nationalnyckeln vol. CY 91 Coleoptera: Cerambycidae.)

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6ft) with my camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened. The image was not rotated.

This is the second time this species is shown on TN. Anne Gattlen(Anel) has shown a specimen from the Swiss Alps recently.

Hello Ivan!
I just returted from the trip and I see a very interesting species of Cerambycidae in your collection! Really I saw many different European long-horned beetle species till now but not this one! At first view I though that this is some colour variation of Leptura species, but it looks really different! Bravo and many thanks for something unusual and intersting! :>
All the best from Lodz!
Friendly yours,

Hello Ivan, a splendid close-up shot of this beautifully paterned longhorn. TFS. Regards,

Jimminy Ivan...You have an almost perfect, if not perfect depth of field here. Considering that is the original image...amazing! A great lesson in how to keep the focus on the subject...you more than likely would have been a fine teacher at some higher level Ivan!

ello Ivan, Great closeup shot with so much sharpness. Well focussed shot with excellent details. Ganesh

Hi Ivan
Very good POV great composition. There are little problems with sharpness maybe little unsharp mask could help. I have never seen these spcies and it is also very interesting insect.

Question Mark is an apt name for this Longhorn, Ivan. Those black markings go well with the pale colour of the abdomen. Its antennae too are rather long.
Very good capture from a POV that brings forth the salient features of this insect.
I travelled with you through your note.

Hi Ivan,
Love the comp and POV..Probably the best for this type of insect with its unique topside markings.
Excellent detail/DOF, exposure, and use of the ambient light with very nice color.
Well done!

hello Ivan,
Very interesting to notice that you see the same species, I showed a short time ago, up north. Very clear and sharp representation. Amazing to see all the commun species with the Alpine regions you have in Sweden.
Thanks and best regards

Hi Ivan, fantastic bug with splendid focus, great colors and excellent sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Buena disposición del insecto. Buenos y reales colores. Un bello conjunto.

Hello Ivan. Well spotted by your son of this longhorn. You have framed it very well diagonally across the frame at the tip of the leaf leaving out the pleasing silenced green background. The image is in pristine sharpness and well metered capture. I like the detail and very good control of the shallow depth in the shot. Thanks for sharing and warmest regards. Jusni

Hello Ivan,
a beautiful shot of this insect. Sharpness and clarity is so stunning that the powdery look is very astonishing.
Great composition on the leaf and blurred bg makes the subject looks more lovely with the interesting existing patterns.
