Some might say that these colours clash, but they are the colours of nature. I believe this shot to be true to colour.

This a male Idas Blue (Plebejus idas) a blue Lycaenid that is locally common and widespread in the whole of Sweden where the habitat is suitable. It is also widespread in practically all of Europe but absent from the British Isles.

It can be told from the very similar Silver-studded Blue (P. argus) by the distinctly narrower black margins to the wings. Both species fly in July and August and both have a variety of larval host plants that include various leguminous plants and heather. The Idas blue also occurs in the Swedish Arctic region, whereas the Silver-studded Blue is rare N. of Stockholm.

The flower is that of the Wood Cranesbill (Geranium silvaticum). They are often to be found growing in the broad roadside verges of northern Swedish roads. I posted a Longhorn beetle dependent on this flower that also attract butterflies like this Idas Blue.

This was taken with my camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Hello Ivan

This is a beauty for your perspective and lovely colors. Good depth allows to make out details in both butterfly and flower. I like the green BG as well.

TFS and Best
Ravi

Hi Ivan,

very interesting shot- the wings of butterfly looks like a part of the flower- very good composition, nice colours, good sharpness. Little noisy BG but doesn't disturb the good look.
TFS, cheers
Adrian

Hello Ivan,

Very nice capture of Idas Blue. Open wings are with details and brilliant colors. Nice composition and POV. DOF is aapt and blurred BG brings the focus on the subject.Very well exposed and thanks for sharing.

A very apt title Ivan...The colours fate brought you and this butterfly together on this day with lens in hand...Cranesbill is new to me. It is a wonderful colour of off blue into the violet range yet still a sub-wave of simialr blue..and the butterfly itself is the blue which I adore so very much, not only in nature but in tangible non organic "things" which surround me in my locale.

Hej Ivan,
this is a beauty and you have captured so well but I think
it need a bit of improvement ;-)) see the WS.
Lovely colours, very fine details and nice composition.
Well done, mf

Nu är det varm och skönt här uppe utan att vara för soligt och torrt för det kommer en och annan regnskur mellan varven.

Hi Ivan,

Not a color combination I would pick for an outfit but they are both gorgeous flowers and the butterfly and flower look wonderful together. I love the position of the blue butterfly on the violet flower. Colors are exquisite with wonderful details. Beautiful background and composition.

Hola Ivan, buen macro.
Me gusta la composición de esta toma con buena definición y bonitos tonos de color.
Buen desenfoque del fondo, limpio, resaltando mejor los colores de la flor y la mariposa. Un saludo

Hello Ivan,
Perfect composition with the title!
the colour contrast in the whole composition truly beautiful with the vibrant colour indeed!
the bg colour makes the subject more outstanding even!
well done
thanks for the notes as well
best regards
Tony

hello Ivan

what a beautiful photo, i knewed that it is a butterfly
but in the thumbnail it is giving a beautiful effect
of 2 colored tone flower, excellent focus on the butterfly
with the great sharpness and details and the off focus
of the flower's petals it is giving very fine DOF,

and another thing that i love of your photo, it is that we have
3 layers of colored tone image, one colour tone on each layer,
the butterfly, the flower and the green vegetation, TFS

Hi Ivan

You are right - this combination works! Nice detail and color here, combined with a great pose.

James

I sometimes wonder whether it is sheer good luck or being at the right place at the right time that enables us to take a picture of such beauty and power, Ivan.
That the beautiful Idas Blue chose to sit on a brilliantly coloured Cranesbill with its wings fully open simply because it sensed your presence is a conviction that I find unable to shake off easily. :)
So thanks for being there at the right moment and giving us so much of joy through this superb capture of the symphony of nature's colours.
Regards.
Ram

Hi Ivan,

NO! They don't clash - they tone in well together. That pink has a bluish tone to it, Ivan!!
I love these Blue butterflies, and sitting on the pink geranium like this is quite beautiful. I like seeing all the hairs on the wings and body - good shot
Janice

Hi Ivan,
A nice capture of this Idas Blue. Superb details with a very good composition. BTW have you tried your new P&S with these beauties. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan, splendid composition with fascinating butterfly and beautiful flower, fantastic colors, excellent sharpness and fine details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Ivan,
The colours is one aspect of course. But what attracted me to this picture is the great resemblance in the shape of the petals and wings. Looks like one flower is kept over another. Very interesting. TFS.

Blue on purple(or is it?)You bring out the romance in nature, Ivan, it's beauty to the fullest!
Cheers!

Hello Ivan,

I do not understand why so many people have deleted their names from the site or have 'gone on holiday'. It is a political mystery which has passed me by! I have heard rumblings of critiqueing being removed but do not understand why! I feel a stranger on a site where I once knew so many people and had so many friends!

Anyway, I will continue to give critques where and when I find it appropriate. This is a very beautiful butterfly captured with fine details and perfect colours.
I do like the vertical orientation!
Good dof.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Ivan. The butterfly looks like part of the flower in the thumbnail. I like the beautiful framing and precision metering of your equipment here. Sharp details with full spreading wings in pleasant framing. Well done and thanks for sharing. Best regards. Jusni

Hello Ivan, thanks a lot for heling me with the ID. Im very very poor in identifying the butterfly. I was searching for quite sometimes to identify it. But the blind in this field Im too slow.
As for your shot, it is really pin sharp and very clear indeed for both the butterfly and the flower.
Great composition of the contrasting pestel colours - pink and light blue. Very subtle and very soft capture.
Thanks for your help.

Warm regards,
Foozi
