Lesser Marbled Fritillary (Brenthis ino)
Swedish name: Älggräspärlemorfjäril.

This individual was taken on the way to the Swedish Mountains. My son and I stopped by the roadside where there were lots of flowers and photographed some butterflies, among which was this Lesser Marbled Fritillary.

It is found in most of Sweden except the very north wherever there is a damp meadow that has its larval host plant, Filipendula ulmaria, even F. vulgaris and further north Rubus chamaemorus and it can be seen on nearby areas with flowers.

When translated, the Swedish name means ‘Meadowsweet Fritillary’.

It can be distinguished from other northern fritillaries by the dentate almost continuous black band round the outer edge of the wings. In some individuals it looks double-lined. Looking at the underside of the hindwing is the easiest way though, by seeing the clear violet brown band across it.

It is found in most of Europe except the extreme south and west.

I would like to have had a better DOF but had to keep the shutter speed high as I was chasing this with the camera hand-held. The image was taken at a distance of about 1,8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened and adjusted for levels.

These are more or less my kind of camera settings, Ivan :).
And you have done a good job with them. The butterfly looks enchanting with those fine patterns on its spread-out wings.
The green leaf provides a fitting contrast with the yellow of the Fritillary.
Best regards,

Hello Ivan,

There are such fine colors in your photo and the butterfly is making a nice contrast with the green leaves. You have chosen a good POV so the insect can be well seen. I also like the composition og the image with the main subject placed slightly to the right.

Thank you for sharing,

Ciao Ivan,
bellissima immagine per una bellissima farfalla dai fantastici colori ben contrastati dal BG delle foglie, ottimi POV e definizione che permettono di apprezzare molto bene i dettagli dei disegni delle ali aperte.

Hello Ivan, great close-up shot of this beautiful fritillary with wonderful details and nice composition. TFS.

Hello Ivan,
Excellent capture . Spot on sharpness for a handheld shot. Good colours and contrasts. The green leaves helps the colourful buuerfly to stand out in the frame.A higher DOf might have included the left wing also in focus, but sometimes conditions may not be ideal .:)Nevertheless it is a beautiful picture, Ivan.
Thanks and Regards,

Hi Ivan,

What makes this butterfly even more beautiful to my eyes is the angle created by it and the leaves it is resting on. The colors are magnificent and enhanced by the lovely greens. Wonderful details and superb composition.

Hello Ivan !
A beautiful close-up on this beautiful butterfly ! I like the pose of the b-fly, with the wings wide open so we can fully admire its beauty, and I also like the vivid colors and the contrast betwwen the orange b-fly and the green leaf. DOF looks quite OK for me, considering the circumstances in which you have taken the picture - I know how hard it is to chase butterflies, sometimes. Very well done !

Hi Ivan. A colourful picture from your archives. Your top POV lets us see the whole of the wing markings down to the hairs on the body. sharp focusing and rich colours. well done TFS.

Hi Ivan.

Apart from the flawless butterfly shot, I am amazed with the Swedish name of this butterfly - Älggräspärlemorfjäril. I am absolutely clueless of how it sounded like and I don't think I'll ever remember on how to spell it as well :-).

Fine pov with sharpness and details throughout the body and antennas. Excellent shot from six speed in well controlled exposure of this beauty.

Well done and best regards,

hello Ivan!
