[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
As I don't have any up-to date shots at present, I took this one from my archives.

This fly is a fairly common Tachinid species, Echinomyia fera, the 'echinomyia' refering to the spiky body and the 'fera' refering to its reddish brown body and legs. It is common in most of Europe and is found from late spring until late summer.

It is about 14 mm long.

Of over 8200 (thanks Radomir!) of the world's species of Tachinid flies about 270 are found in Sweden. All are parasitic on other insects and spiders.

This species is parasitic on some species of butterflies and moths, including the Cabbage White. It lays its egg on the caterpillar host plant and the tiny maggot bores its way into the caterpillar when one comes along. The maggot lives as an internal parasite and the caterpillar grows but does not reach the pupal stage, which makes it a parasitoid as a true parasite allows the host to continue living (thanks Radomir - Cicindela!).

These parasitic insects help to keep a balance of numbers, so that, for instance, the Cabbage White butterfly does not become too numerous.

This image was taken at the closest possible distance for my 420 mm, i.e., about 1.8 meters with the camera hand-held and after size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hello Ivan,
you show a clear and sharp picture of the fly. I always like to discover the fine details which is only possible with well-focused and sharp pictures, such as this one!
Sometimes I hesitate to write always the same phrases - but it's simply true: I like the pleasant natural colours.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan,
Very interesting fly, I have never seem it before
nice colors and "spikes".. great macro shot my friend

Hi Ivan,
Great macro. Thanks for sharing.
- Nirmal

ps: The leaves are a bit too bright. Can you do something about this through WS.

Hello Ivan,

this is the fly I would like to see for so long. You made a spectacular portrait of Echinomyia, all of it is in focus, the composition is good with he neutral green leaves. You avoided the reflections on the glossy parts (is it without flash or the flash so well manipulated?). Extremely well done, Ivan! Thanks for presenting the oldie but goodie.
Best regards
Dietrich

Hi Ivan. This is an excellent close up shot of the fly. the detail is first class. you have captured very sharp focusing. with good rich colours. a nice pov.you can see all the hairs on the body. well done TFS. good notes too.

Nick..
You and ulla have a good weekend let hope the weather is fine.

Hello Ivan!
At first I would like that I am really happy that once again you are showing us a non-commercial picture! Flies (except Asilidae and colourful Syrphidae) are not popular on TN and for me as an entomologist it is really great to watch also members of another falimies! Especially in there is an interesting note added :) Here we have it!
Sharpness, details and composition are very good. And it is nice to see that you are keeping your very good picture standards!
According to the note I have some small correction :)
1. there are some 8200 species known from this family :)
2. most of Tachinidae fly species are parasitoids (larvae live inside a living host, finally the host dies) but some are parasitic too (the host survives) :)
3. Among hosts there are not only Lepidoptera but also beetles, bugs, sawflies, grasshoppers, and even centipedes! :)

Anyway, this is a very interesting presentation and many thanks for showing it!!!
Best withes from Lodz,
Radomir

PS. By the way, just for fun- not for points, I would like to invite you here :)

Hi Ivan,

I'm sure your archives are chock full of amazing shots. Wonderful close-up of this fly showing the lovely colors and fine details. The spikes are amazing. Looks great on the nice green leaves.

Lengthy dialog on the world of nature becomes a Masters class in learning! What a good lesson with quality picture included. The macro world, meaning that smaller than us in this case, is not as simple as many think. And if read, your notes tell us more about the common theories of nature held today in universities and colleges. Very good lesson. Super picture to go along.Very good work.
