[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The new year starts as the old one ended: grey and sleety and opportunities for photography are limited to say the least.

My archives yielded this image of a species of grasshopper that occurs on a sandy heath, not a field as the name suggests. It belongs to the order Saltatoria, that includes Grasshoppers and Crickets.

The Field Grasshopper (Chorthippus brunneus) is widespread in Europe, including Sweden from summer until well into the autumn.

This is a male. Its song is easily recognised: it consists of a series of 'sst' sounds at a frequency of about 0.2 sec. They can hear each other by means of the light-coloured kidney-shaped tympanal opening seen here above the top of the thigh.

The red on the upper side of the tip of the abdomen is typical of the species, but like other similar species they are hard to ID as they are all very variable. This specimen was nearly 2cm long

I took this shot with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters. As this male was rather active in the autumn sunshine I had to use a high shutterspeed.

After size reduction the image was cropped by about 40% and selectively sharpened

Hi Ivan,
Firstly may i wish you a very happy new year, and also the hope that your weather situation improves soon! i have just had 2 weeks off work and i think only 2 or 3 of those were good enough for some decent photography!
But, nevermind, as yuor archives clearly still have some beauty's to give! Excellent sharp detail, a great low POV and precise DOF - well done!

Good angle and DOF....of this not welcome insect. They were so thick last year that they actually jump all over me...but I only took a couple photos..They are skittish things..and I have NEVER seen one in flight..or jump or whatever it is called..That make take two leaps!
