In order to be convinced that Spring has arrived, Swedes like to see signs of Spring. We look for flowers like Aconites and crocuses, butterflies like Brimstones and Tortoiseshells, and birds like skylarks and Green Plovers.

This is a Green Plover (Vanellus vanellus) that has many names. Another English name is the Peewit, because of the sound it makes and another is the Lapwing because of the way it flies. The Swedish name is Tofsvipa, the plover with a crest.

The green Plover is common in most of Europe and it it a permanent resident in the SW and the UK where birds from the rest of Europe overwinter. It begins to arrive in Sweden at the end of February.

It nests in damp undisturbed meadows.

This is a female that is a little lighter in colour than the male and the markings on the head are not so clearly black and white.

She is feeding in this autumn-sown field and may even nest here but many Lapwings and Skylarks are hindered from completing their breeding by modern agriculture, the spreading of fertilisers, for example, can destroy a clutch of eggs.

This was taken from the car at a distance of about 15 meters and is quite heavily cropped. After size reduction it was selectively sharpened.

Hej Ivan,

Car is definitely very good as hide for shooting birds. This a great picture with nice low POV, very succesfull sharpening and a result the bird is completely in focus and BG blurred. Excellent work.

Hello Ivan,
Well composed shot of this Lapwing.
Nice color, details, and exposure, it looks like the light was directly above. Very good DOF at F/5.6 from this POV also.
Looks great in spite of the large crop..
Well done!
Howard

...Hoppas att vädret är bra på Mallis och att du hittar massor med fåglar och insekter. Ta hand om Ulla och ha en bra resa om vi inte hörs innan. Jag planerar att spendera en månad i Indonesia under Juli månad :)

Gee Ivan...you mean Swedes even BELIEVE in spring? Hard to imagine...and with your lack of snow this year what will you do now for nation pride?! Oy! As some would say..and those doggone bank accounts are no longer secrets. One has to go to the Grand Caymans now...and how come we have no posters from there as I think of it?

Your bird looks somewhat timid. Maybe even the bird isn't sure of the season...but it is a fine image and some interesting notes to assure us you have not gone over the edge with global warming.

Hi Ivan, I have always known them as Peewits after the call they make...I was brought up on a farm and we had hundreds, now I have not seen one for 4 years...This is a wonderful image for composition, clarity and good colours, and for me a sad reminder of the loss of these birds....TFS

Very fine image of this Peewit, Ivan!
You've captured it's glossy feathers and long crest really clearly.
Excellent low-down POV and a great composition.
Sharp with lots of detail.
DOF is a bit shallow I think but that is only a slight nit.
Some superb work my friend!
Well done!!

Hi Ivan

Not so many of these nest in the UK nowdays. My grandparents had a farm in Derbyshire called Peewit Hall. In those days you could collect the eggs until a certain date (they would keep laying).

Excellent detail and colours.

Hello Ivan. This is another superb capture of your top quality image collection. The sharpness is flawless with excellent exposure of the plumage. Good lighting in natural environment. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hi Ivan, this is a new one for me, so thanks for the introduction. Even though it's new, it does have that "Plover look". I like those green feathers, and you caught the eye very well. Not bad for a 15 meter, cropped shot. You still have very good detail both on the bird and the immediate dirt and grass around him. Very nice PP operation.

Thanks, John

Hi my beloved Friend Ivan,

Hi Ivan,
Wonderful shot of this Lapwing and you have presented its plumage colours and details so beautifully. Great handling of harsh natural light and exposure levels and I like the way it is eyeing your from over its shoulder. Excellent low POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Very nice capture of a departing Plover in good exposure and fine focus which provides us with a high degree of plumage detail Ivan, and all this in spite of the heavy cropping, well, you are a man of miracles when it comes to nature photography my friend, thank you indeed for sharing this beauty.
Mehmet

Nice capture of a Green Plover from the rear, Ivan. It is wary of your presence; the expression in its eye says so.
So the signs of spring are already there in your part of the world.
A very good image of this harbinger of spring with fine details on its wings. I like its crest.
Thanks for sharing it and warm regards.

What a crisp sharp image of the fine bird. You managed to reflect every feather and grass precisely. DOF is selected perfectly too. Colours of the image are superb too. Low POV is also impressive. My compliments.
