Though these two pairing Green-veined Whites are not taking nectar from the Cuckoo Flowers, they are using the flowers as a resting place for propagating their genes. These flowers are also often attractive as sources of nectar to them and other species of butterflies.

The damp meadow where this was taken was full of Cuckoo Flowers, or Lady’s Smock (Cardamine pratense). The reason for the English names are quite clear, referring either to the appearance of the flowers or to the time that they are in flower, in the late spring when the cuckoo arrives. The Swedish name, Ängsbräsma refers to its habitat, meadows, which is the meaning of ‘pratense’. This is a larval host plant for both the Green-veined White and the Orange Tip butterflies and is common in S. Sweden and most of Europe.

The Green- veined White is common in almost the whole of Europe. The English name stems from the green effect of the sprinkling of black scales on the yellowish scales along the veins of the underside of the hindwings.

The larval host plants are several species of Cruciferous plants (Brassicaceae), such as Cuckoo flower, Arabis, Honesty and many more.

The underside of the wings in the spring generation tends to be more yellow than later generations, which could be as much as three in a year. The female is more yellow than the male and she has more black scales along the veins on the upper sides of the wings.

As I wanted the right white balance on the flowers, I under-exposed a little, this made the butterflies not unduly dark. The image was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 2 meters and is lightly cropped and selectively sharpened after size reduction.

Hi my dear friend, Ivan,
What a lovely capture of these two pairing Green-veined Whites on Cuckoo Flower. Colours are wonderful. TFS my friend.

PS. Yesterday when I was conducting the trip to Odemis I also photographed a butterfly ambushing by a white flower crab spider:)I know it is not good for a butterfly but it is a natural reality:(. I will upload it in next days.

Excellent sharp details, very nice colors and light.

Bonjour Ivan.

Hi Ivan. I do like the pastle colours in this picture of the pair of butterflies. The flowers by them self would have been good but to get the butterflies as well is first class. you have sharp focusing which has given fine detail . well done TFS.

Very, very beautiful Ivan.
Sharpness, details, colours, composition and POV are marvelous.
Great DOF.

Splendido momento di cattura di due cavolaie sullo stesso fiore, eccellenti POV, DOF e composizione in una perfetta simmetria sulla diagonale, ottima nitidezza, bellissimi i colori e meraviglioso BG. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Ivan,

Great capture of these Green-veined Whites. I did not have any luck this weekend with Little Ringed Plovers. This however is just excellent, great colours, contrast, composition and sharpness of details.

Hello Ivan!
Really at first I stopped because of the title. The word cuckoo was very unusual as for butterlies and I really wanted to check why you used this name :) The explanation is very interesting, even if there is no connection with insect's biology :)
According to the technique I must say that this is another fantastic and very educative presentation of butterfly species. Clarity and DOF (especially according to the "upper" specimen) are great! Nothing to add :)
On the other hand it is a pity that the second individual is not visible in 100%.
Anyway, this is a very good presentation :)
Friendly yours,

Hi Ivan,
Had to come back to this beautiful image.
Perhaps the best b-fly post I've seen on TN in a good long while.
Very nice work!

Hello Ivan!
This is really excellent!
The first thing I noticed was the exceptional DOF! The butterfly in the FG is tack-sharp and then so is the butterfly in the BG! Many people (Including me) can't get one butterfly in focus and especially not at f/11!! So very, very well done to you for that.
The composition is absolutely perfect! A great diagonal line from the tip of the antennae of one butterfly to the tip of the antennae of the other.
Very sharp with loads and loads of detail.
Excellent lighting and natural colours.
Brilliant BG.
Superbly well done!
