Hoverfly (Syrphus vitripennis)

Swedish name for hoverfly: Blomfluga

When I looked at this image after taking the photograph of this hoverfly I noticed the asymmetry of the markings on the abdomen. This is most probably due to some disturbance during its development in the pupal stage. It looks like one segment of the abdomen didn’t completely form and the underdeveloped bit fused with the adjacent segments.

One can speculate how this deformity has affected the way this hoverfly could live, but it could certainly fly and presumably feed on the nectar or pollen of these Umbelliferous small white flowers (Pimpinella saxifraga), but whether it could reproduce is open to speculation.

This species is common in most parts of Europe. The macro was taken at distance of about 20 cm (8 in) with my compact camera. After fairly heavy cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

This is great macro shot for both Syrphip fly and white flowers. Great focus and details under fine lighting. Nicely composed. Thanks for sharing, my friend.
sorry for my silence, two weeks ago, my computer, harddisk etc were stolen from car. So, my photographes flew. I hope I came back to TN short time later.
best wishes to you and Ulla.

Hi Ivan,
A nice capture of this beautiful hover fly. The deformity is clearly visible. A very good image. Excellent sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan, an interesting asymetry of the markings. In some species of herptiles we use this feature for identification of the species diagnosis, if it is so stable in high proportion.
TFS this fine shot my friend,
Cheers,

Bayram

Hello Ivan
A beautifully presented image of this hoverfly with as you say a definite deformity in the abdomen.
Deformity in the insect world is something rarely seen and it must happen equally if not more frequently than say birds or mammals.
All the Best
Billy

Hi Ivan,

You are so right about the irregular markings! Interesting to see this and I'm glad you explained the probable causes. The fly seems to be doing well enjoying the beautiful flowers. Colors and details are excellent - I love the wings. Beautiful setting and composition.

Hi Ivan!

Very interesting observation. Maybe it is some kind of mutation? Hard to say how often it takes place because it is visible mostly on photos I think. I've never seen such deformed insect. Photo is as always very good with high quality and nice subject.

A perfect capture of quite an interesting situation Ivan, a similar deformity in vertebrates is known as scoliosis, but this is the first time I'm seeing such a deformity in an invertebrate. Should be a rare occurrence my friend, TFS it indeed!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Excellent capture of this very special Hoverfly ! I love his unusual markings, I didn't know something like this could exist. Excellent details, nice natural colors, beautiful POV from above, and I also love all these little white flowers all arounf the Hoverfly. Very well done !

Hello Ivan,
A beautifully composed shot of this hoverfly with perfect sharpness and natural colour.
The assymetrical pattern is indeed very strange ... something I've never seen before.
It also looks quite similar to another common hoverfly here,Eristalsis tenax.
Jolly good work.
Cheers & TFS,
Steve

Hallo Ivan
I really fancy this photo. It is colourful and bright, and the colours creates the feeling of cheerfulness and a sunny atmosphere. I just love the shine on the wings, the fine bodyhairs and the big eyes. In overall this is a warm and inviting to look at image. Oh and before I forget, the tiny white flowers is beautiful. It is flowers that will fit nicely in a little girls hair. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ivan,
very well inspected and shown about the physical of this fly. The beauty of nature is so well shared with the colours and patterns besides those beautiful flowers accompanying the shot.
i like the positioning of the fly and also the symmetrical patterns of the branches in its blurry depiction. It combination make your shot so lovely.

Foozi

An excellent close-up, great detail and sharpness, and a nice composition. Your note is interesting too. I don't think I've ever seen such a variation in insects, quite rare, I would think.
