Great Spotted Woodpecker male (Dendrocopus major).
Swedish name: Större hackspett

This male came to feed on one of the suet balls hanging from a lilac bush close to a window. Ulla took him while he was hanging on it. He then hopped on to one of the stems of the bush and I took this shot. You can see the remains of the fat still on his beak.

This species has been shown many times on TN and is the most common and widespread species of woodpecker in Europe. The female lacks red on the nape of the neck.
It is often an eager visitor of bird feeders to take in the energy and nourishment provided by the suet balls when insect larvae in trees are hard to come by.

This was taken through triple glazing at a distance of about 3 meters (10 ft) and after slight cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

As this was taken during our almost continuous cloud cover that we have had for two months the light was poor but I managed ISO 400 with the camera hand-held

Hello Ivan,
Superb sharpness in natural pose. There is visible perfectly his beautiful plumage.
Regards, Pawel

Hello Ivan,

I am so impressed with this shot!
The sharp focus captures the incredible details of this timid bird. I am amazed at the hand-held quality.
I love the way it is sandwiched between the twigs, almost like a detective trying to disappear in the shadows!

I have seen the very occasionally on our nut feeder but the slightest movement and they fly away.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

What a lovely shot, my dear friend Ivan, very well seen, timed and shot!

The face turned sideways displays the shape and profile of the bird so well. It is a pretty bird with beautiful assortment of colours. This is a lovely close-up, with fine detail. The glint in the eye and the almost roughly shaped beak adds a special touch to this photo. This is a lovely presentation. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ivan.
It is really from my dream. Fantastic image of the bird and reproduction of all beauties of it. Refined, precise work. However, tree branches patter is so amazing and supplements the brilliant image of the woodpecker by the best way. My congratulations and TFS.

Hi Ivan,
what a wonderful capture of Greater Spotted Woodpecker taken from an excellent POV with outstanding sharpness; i like the vivid colours in this nice composition; everyday i also see a pair of these beautiful birds on a tree near my house, but never well visible as this one.
TFS. Best regards.

Hi Ivan,

Are all Greater Spotted Woodpeckers this beautiful or is this one something special? His colors and markings are stunning. A fantastic shot with outstanding details of his face, eye, wings and plumage. Besides, the combination of red, white and black, is my favorite. The pose in the bare branches is marvelous. Wonderful vertical combination.

Hi Ivan,
this one is artistically composed. The subject is well sandwiched between the branches amiking it so lovely amnd well seen. The patterns and colours really stands out from there.
Your superbs sharpness really an asset here, giving the subject great clarity in its feathers, beaks and the lovely eye.
Well taken and such a pleasure to see this outstanding creation from your lens.

Hello Ivan !
I have seen this bid many times on TN, but no matter how many times more I'll see him, I willstill be amazed by its beauty. The colors, the markings - it's really one of the most beautiful birds in Europe. Sharpness, details, colors, composition, POV and BG, everything is perfect, and I specially like the blurred branches under the bird, making sort of a parallel with the main branch. Very well done !

Hello Ivan,

A very nicely composed image, good sharpness and detail. Your windows must be optical glass, as I don't seem to see any image degradation as a result of shooting through triple glazing.

Dear Ivan,
colourful Dendrocopus major gracefully imbedded in a setting of rhythmical twigs, the gentle green hues offering a perfectly well supporting non-distracting background to the distinctly coloured woodpecker. Beautiful image!
Thank you! With best regards,

Hi Ivan,
I also have suet balls in my garden and everyday I have the same visitor. Only my visitor is female and very shy.
This male looks great and the quality is very good shot through glass. It is a joy to look at.

Hi Ivan
Vivid red on peacefull, homogenous OOF background. Good diagonal composition and nice natural colors

hi Ivan,

nice capture from this greater Spotted woodpecker.
A bird difficult to photgraph and to spot him, I have been 2 months buzzy with this bird before I captured him.
Beautiful pov and colours.

Hi Ivan,
I think that Woodpeckers are the same around the world; they are just crazy about suet. This is an excellent capture of this nice Greater Spotted Woodpecker with very good composition, details and great pose from the bird. I'm impressed by the control you had on exposure, especially as it for the white which looks perfect! Well done!
