Small Whiteface (Leucorrhinia dubia)

Swedish name: Myrtrollslända, meaning ‘bog dragonfly’

This is a memory from the late spring when we travelled to the largest peat-bog in Southern Sweden called Stora Mossen.

There are 5 species of Whiteface Dragonflies in Europe and all are found in Sweden. Whitefaces occur mostly in NE Europe.

The Small Whiteface is the most widespread, occurring across N. Europe as far west as the UK. It occurs where there are ponds and small lakes that are usually acid in character.
Here the male is fully visible while the female lacks his red markings and is marked creamy yellow and black instead. She will lay her eggs in some small pool somewhere in the bog.

I captured this mating pair only a hundred meters from the car park among the birches and spruces around the edge of this huge bog.

This was taken at a distance of about 2meters (6 ft 6 in) with my camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Merhaba değerli dostum,
Yine harika bir böcek çiftinin makrosunu postalamışsın. Kanatlarındaki detaylar ve netlik herzamanki gibi kusursuz görünüyor.

Hello Ivan,
a superb and sharp picture of this dragonfly couple. Selection of the suitable depth of field is critical here
and has been perfectly done. The clarity of the wing venation in spite of the richly structured background
is admirable. Also the point of view is well chosen. A picture from a more lateral perspective would also
be interesting. Perhaps you shot one ...?
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan!

Very interesting picture. I've never seen these dragonflies in wild - they look great! I like black/yellow/orange colours of their bodies. Good moment captured in high quality. Pity that there is many twigs in BG, but this is obvious - dragonflies always tries to hide during copulation.

That's what I call acrobatic love, Ivan, they are amazing insects! There is something unusual in your picture, the pattern of vertical twigs including the dragonflies is orignal and beautiful. The only thing creating a diversion are the polka dots of the wings. Well seen!

Hi Ivan,

A perfect example of taking full advantage of an opportunity. These Whitefaces are new to me. You have captured this mating pair perfectly giving us an unusual view of the wings. Colors and details are excellent. They seem to jump out from the background. Thank you for the introduction and for the interesting notes.

HI Ivan,

I love the intimate nature of the photo. The detail and focus on the dragonflies is superb. A very good DPF makes this work. It is amazing how delicate the wings are.

Hello Ivan,

Very good DOF,exposure and excellent sharpness.
I've yet to capture a mating pair.
Very nice work.
TFS & Cheers

Hello Ivan !
This is a very nice picture, the Dragonflies are very beautiful, I love their black color with reddish/orange markings on their backs. Details are excellent, and I also like your POV, it's a bit unusual, for usually pairings are captured from the side - I like it. The female looks strange, seen like that ! :-) Very well done !

Bella composición y a destacar la buena combinación de colores del conjunto. Oportuno angulo que da realismo y profundidad.
Saludos Ivan: Josep Ignasi

Hi Ivan

Ahhh...what a terrific capture!
Well, if this TN Meeting will eventually take place in Poland and you could come, i'd love to learn more from you on how to find and capture these fellows...i still haven't seen a single Leucorrhinia in the wild to this day :(
...And you've caught a beautiful pair here!
The details and colors are lovely and one can clearly ID them from this angle, too.
Very good control over the light, as well as excellent choice of DOF.
Another splendid one for the books, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Ivan

Hello Ivan,

The dragonflies are photographed from an interesting POV and you have got a fine perspective over the insects. Image sharpness is very good showing in great details both body and wings. Colors looks very natural being saturated and vivid.

Thank you for sharing,

Hi Ivan
Ha Ha Funny POV. Great moment, perfect blured background and good sharpness

Hello Ivan!
To take a picture of Leucorrhinia in such pose - it is really great documentary photo! I remember when I tried to take a picture of single one resting on the tree - almost imposible! These are so fast!
What to say more? Congratulation and best greetings from white (because of snow) Lodz!
