Since ancient times, people living in the northern hemisphere have, at the end of a period of frigid temperatures and darkness had a need to celebrate the arrival of spring with cleansing bonfires and celebration.
Swedes do this on April 30, Walpurgis Night. By this time spring is already well established in the southern parts of the country. Northerners, however, still have snow-covered lowland areas, but even so it does not seem to reduce the celebratory feeling on this particularly Swedish holiday and old tradition.
Swedes of all ages come out to say goodbye to the dark, dank, cold winter and welcome the advent of spring, the return of the sun and summer and with that hope. They do this by singing their hearts out around huge roaring community fires. Choral singing is a popular pastime in Sweden, and this is one occasion when nearly every male voice choir sings traditional spring songs. As a member of the Åhus male voice choir I shall be taking part this evening.
The singing tradition is about 200 years old and was started by the choirs of the Universities of Lund and Uppsala, but the lighting of bonfires to celebrate the occasion is much older. The name is taken from St Valborg, a British 8th century nun who founded a convent in Germany and was canonised. She was said to have been born on May Day.

Map Butterfly Araschnia levana form levana
Swedish name: Kartfjäril

This species arrived in Sweden about 1990 and has now become common in Scania and is spreading north. This is the orange-coloured spring form The summer form is mainly black.

As the spring generation emerges after hatching from the hibernating pupa about now this is suitable species to denote Walpurgis.

The underside of the wings as seen here looks like a map and is more colourful in the spring form.

This was taken with my long lens, the camera being hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened a little.

Hello Ivan,
the complex and beautiful wing pattern of the map butterfly is particularly well shown.
The colours are nicely reproduced. The butterfly appears very brilliant and clear against
the background. Camera settings are 'extreme' for the exposure. Perhaps, a slightly smaller aperture
would have 'sharpened' the antenna tips.
Best wishes and have a nice day,

Hello Ivan,
what a wonderful picture of Araschnia levana, outstanding sharpness and fantastic brilliant colours. a great view of this splendid butterfly to show very well the "map" of the closed wings.
Best regards

ciao Ivan!
an amazing catch with this elegant species, new for me, captured in profile with good sharpness and details ..

compliments sERGIO

Hi Ivan,

That's a very attractive butterfly, and a nice photo of it. You've managed to get the plane of the wings in the camera's plane of sharp focus really well, resulting in good detail throughout the wing area.

Wish you too a Happy Walpurgis Night, Ivan!
I had read about this festival years ago (1965-1967) while learning German for my graduation course. Amazing how our minds can retain memories of even words that might have appealed to us at one time.
The nether side of this butterfly's wings is so well captured it really and powerfully illustrates why it is called a 'Map' butterfly.
The colours on the wings are rich and beautiful.
Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Hi Ivan,

What a nice celebration Walpurgis Night must be. I have not heard of that before. I'm not sure I have seen Map Butterfly before either. It is very pretty with wonderful colors. The pose is perfect showing off the shape, head, body and wings - all shown in fine detail. It stands out beautifully from the nice natural setting.

Hello Ivan,

Sounds like a great idea and one heck of a party, although were heading into our winter now, and one does notice the mercury dropping especially at night. This is a great shot of a Map Butterfly again something I've never heard of before. Striking colours on the wings, excellent detail really well framed with a very good POV, very nice work all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Hello Ivan,
I hope you had a happy Walpurgis Night and that you have sung well!
Until now I never had the opportunity to see this beautiful and special butterfly which you show us from the side (most of the pictures are taken from above on the open wings). I suppose that you were laying on the ground to take this excellent picture :-). The Map butterfly really looks like a little whitch!
Une belle journée

Hi Ivan
Beautiful sharp image. I like the POV and nice blured background. It looks like difficult object to photograph - it was so close to the surface of the ground.

Hi Ivan,
What a beautiful butterfly. Very well captured. Sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.
