On coming back home from a routine walk with our dog this morning I heard the typical 'tick' and whistle alarm calls of the Redstart nearby. As this was a sign that there were fledglings about I quicky took the dog home and fetched my camera. I had already decided to experiment without my usual 1.4 TC.

Redstart juvenile (Phoenicurus phoenicurus)
Swedish name: Rödstjärt.

I went to the spot and both parents were making alarm calls. I took a shot of them to be shown sometime later and of this fledgeling waiting to be fed. I then left the scene as quickly as I could to avoid further disturbance.

I thought I would begin with this little cutie. The English name, like the Swedish, means 'red tail' and here you can see the beginnings of a red tail in this fledgeling.

The Redstart spends the winter in Africa to arrive in Sweden in May and the rest of Europe earlier in the spring. It then leaves for Africa in September. It is found in most of Europe where it is widespread.

This was taken using the 300 mm lens at a distance of about 5 meters. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.
The OOF rowan leaves have tinged the breast but it shows that this youngster was partially under cover.

Though there is less magnification I notice that the images are of better quality without the TC.

Very good capture of this lovely little bird.Nice colors and excellent sharpness and details.

Hello Ivan !
What a lovely shot of this young Redstart ! You have captured amazing details on the plumage and the face, but I also like the soft and natural colors, the beautiful blured BG, the composition and the pose of the bird. The red tail can be nicely seen already. Very well done !

This is you! Your kind of image Ivan. One must be so careful as you were in taking a delicate image like this one...Very soft, yet sharp...you know what I mean...soft in feeling and mood..Sharp where the focal is!

Ah Ivan, the beautiful light in which this beautiful little bird is swimming into! You did well to capture it under the leaves and I like the effect of blurred leaves in a picture, it is natural. The little bird is sharp and you are right, the quality of this picture is examplary. Thank you, very good,

Hi Ivan. This a very cute looking young Redstart. I like the pose on the branch in the sunlight. You have taken it with good detail and natural colours. The tree has given an interesting BG. Being that close the 1.4 TC was not needed. well done TFS.
