The title was taken from the name of a British soul group, the lead singer of which has red hair.

The fact is that the presence of red pigment in hair or other tissues is due to recessive genes that occur in both the animal and plant kingdoms. In humans red-headedness is most prevalent in people of Celtic origins but it occurs in all human types.

No, this is not Lanzarote!

I came across this grasshopper while walking on an area that was once a coal tip but now has several unusual species of plants including Reseda, the food plant of the Bath White butterfly that very occasionally visits this area. There were no bath whites but saw instead this striking little red grasshopper.

Bow-winged Grasshopper Chorthippus biguttulus

Swedish name: Slåttergräshoppa, meaning ‘Meadow grasshopper’.

Though normally this species is camouflaged with a pattern of browns greys and greens, this red form would only be camouflaged on the rosy-red flowers of Rose-bay Willowherb os similarly coloured flowers, it is very conspicuous especially against a BG of pieces of coal!

It is a very variable species and is known to have red forms like this one. This is a female with straight wings, while those of the male have a bowed lower edge. Though absent from the British Isles, it is one of the most common and widespread species in N. Europe. It is found in dry places and waysides, so that this former coal tip would be a suitable habitat.

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

hello Ivan,
Was really thinking about Lazarote looking at your picture! Amazing red color, fitting perfectely to the black environment. I didn't know that Reseda flowers were foodplants for bath Whites. I know some place where they grow, next year I will go to have a look..
Always nice to see a grasshopper, I like them a lot and find them very photogenic :-)
Have a nice Sunday

What an interesting grasshopper... I have never seen anything like it. Amazing colour.

This summer we had a visitor here in Småland of a mutual friend I think (Sigge L. from the botanical museum in Lund) and he managed to get me hooked on dragonflies and all that, so I guess I will also post some insect photos further on... ;o)

Regards/Bengt

Bonjour Ivan, what a thing, I never even thought grasshopper could be red. This is a great shot, with nice notes, very good sharpness on the insect, and a nice contrast of the red against the coal. I didn't even know we could find coal like that on the ground. Thank you, I will go to bed with more in my head!

Hi Ivan!

Rather surprising colour of this grasshopper. I've never seen red one. Very interesting observation and explanation in your note. To be honest red colour is perfect for composition with black rocks :-)

ciao Ivan!
the band of Mick Hucknall's (the red man),that I also like their music
has suggested the title for this unusual red grasshopper for North Europe, the color would be more suitable climates in most warm .. good capture and details
