Gadwall - Anas strepera

We had another go yesterday at finding some birds to photograph! Another wonderful sunny day and a trip down south along the Baltic coast proved fruitful and I found a few species worth portraying! In the outlet of a small river there were lots of Mallards and among them this Gadwall that seemed to have lost its way. It was frequently being mobbed by the Drakes but proudly sailed away as they came to attack. Here it is standing on the bottom by the edge of the river to avoid the strong current, and therefore it shows a greater part of the plumage than if it had been swimming! A lovely sight not often seen here and certainly not at such close range (about 5-6 metres)!

This is a young male Gadwall that still is in the process of developing its adult plumage. The grey markings and the white speculum are typical and it will later develop a darker brown on the head and a black tail.

It is a bird found in open wetlands and wet marshes fringed with dense vegetation but is a scarce-breeding bird in Sweden. It is widespread but less common in Europe too.

Hello Ulla.

Nice shot of this Gadwell.
The light is splendid and gives a beautiful coloring.

A very lively picture of this lost bird, Ulla.
I like the texture and brown tinge of the water you captured by selecting the angle of exposure. It goes extremely well with the colour of the subject.
A wonderful picture with rich details.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Ulla,
those mallards were just jealous because even though they have more colour they don't have the wonderful texture this Gadwall drake has to his plumage.Actually I like both ducks very much and all ducks in general. What I like about this photo is the light you speak of and the way that light shows the wonderful texture of his feathers and the warm colours. The image is sharp and clear as well, which brings him to life. Thanks for sharing this fellow with us ,he lives here too but isn't a very common bird.

Hallo Ulla
This is an outstanding image and superb camera work. The details captured on the plumage are outstanding. Photography on all the detail of the bird including the leather textured beak, the polka dot eye and especially the delicate and silvery looking feathers is great. It was a pleasure looking and admiring this lovely water bird’s beauty. It has a soft touch on the eye. My best regards.
Anna

Hello Ulla,
A very fine light illuminates this picture. Absolutely marvellous the fine patterns of the duck's plumage and the reflections on the water. And I discover a duck which I had seen on a little lake during the summer, not knowing what species it was.
Un double merci donc
