Turquoise Blue male (Polyommatus dorylas)

Swedish name: Väpplingblåving, meaning ‘vetch blue’.

This is the second time I have posted this species: the first time was nearly four years ago, as it is a rare species of Blue in Sweden. It occurs in small numbers near my town and more commonly on the islands of Öland and Gotland.

It is widespread but local in most of Europe where it is getting scarcer.

The larvae feed on the leaves of Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria). This one is resting on the withering flowers of his larval host plant.
The Small Blue (Cupido minimus) also has it as the larval host plant but the larvae feed on its seeds instead of the leaves. This indicates that both species are not competitive.

Though the blue colours is typical with a turquoise shine at certain angles, the best way to be certain of the ID is to look at the underside of the wings. This can be seen in the WORKSHOP.

It flies in July to the beginning of August. In S. parts of Europe it has two generations.

One locality is a goods railway track where there are good stands of the host plant. This is one of two males that I found. The females emerge a day or two later and they are brown.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters with my long lens camera hand held.
After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

Hi Ivan,
Another great macro from you, splendid colors and excellent sharp details. The composition is very nice.TFS and best regards,

I really don't know where to start in your portfolio of photographs Ivan, so I have begun here, although I have added an earlier photo to my favourites. I just don't know how to compliment you on your photography. As a true nature lover, I know where to look, but I have not mastered the technique of how to look, and I certainly do not have the capabilities or the equipment to show what I see. It is evident that you have all these attributes.

You have all the techniques that admire, and I hope to learn from viewing photos such as this!

Hilsen, Amelia

Hi Ivan,

Not only is this a beautiful Blue butterfly but capturing it in this lovely dancing position is fantastic. The wings and head are magnificent with excellent colors, details and textures. The plant it is posing on is very interesting as well. I'm so glad you posted the workshop so we could see the wonderful patterns.

Merhaba Dostum Ivan,

After a long trip including the Middle East i could find a pretext to visit TN and your posts now! This is an impressive macro capture of this pretty b-fly from an unusual POV with excellent clarity and details.

Hello Ivan!

Another beautifull Lyceanid from your collection. This one has got exceptional colours of wings. Very nice POV with good sharpness on eyes and wings. Composition with flower is good. Interesting and educative picture in workshop - blues are very hard to ID for me.

hello Ivan
beautiful image, the blue color of the wings is fantastic and so shiny, like silk,
the details are very sharp and the POV is nice
i like also the plant or dried flower, it looks like a firework
yesterday, the 14th july, we had the national holiday in France, and we had a firework in each village and town
Have a good night

Hola Sr. Ivan.

Anne

Hello Ivan,
beautiful blue in special shine of silvery kind. New to me and the sharpness is splendid.
The flower look like a palm holding the butterfly intact.
nicely portrayed with neat shot of no disruption except flower and butterfly.

Regards,
Foozi

Hallå Argus,
What a wonderful shot! Clear, fantastic and the details are amazing! The butterfly looks like as it made from steel. The blue metallic colour is amazing!

Many thanks for sharing it!

Cheers,
Sascha
