Black-headed Gull. (Chroicocephalus ridibundus)
The generic name 'Larus' has been changed to 'Chroicocephalus'

Swedish name: ’Skrattmĺs’, meaning ‘laughing gull’.

I went down to see how much ice had formed in our harbour and it looked like it usually does in the middle of winter instead of at the beginning as now!

It seems that the early winter weather in Europe is caused by cold air coming down from the Arctic owing to a change in pressures over Iceland and the Azores. This is known as the North Atlantic Oscillation, a climate phenomenon that behaves somewhat like El Nińo in that the change can continue for a long time.

Except for a part on either side of a narrow old bridge, an area of water kept open by a current, it was all frozen.
There was a gathering of gulls on the ice and mallards in the water, all looking for food or waiting to be fed with crumbs from passers-by.

I noticed this gull having a drink at the edge of the ice and took some shots, of which I chose this one.

This species of gull is common in most of Europe. In the breeding season the head is a dark brown and the legs and bill turn a dark crimson colour. In winter the legs and bill are a bright red.

This image was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 12 meters (40 ft). It was moderately cropped and after size reduction it was sharpened a little.

Hello Ivan, lovely shot of this poor black-headed gull. Colours, details, reflection on the ice and composition are great.
TFS ang R's,
Mehmet

Lovely shot of this busy Black-headed Gull, Ivan. They are few factors, which makes a photograph briliant. The first one in my opinion : presenting the specie in its best "light"( point of view, depth of field, composition etc.etc.,) in this manner I think you did I great job. The simplicity which is an obvious element here also helps to enhance the impact. Good clean background, simple closely related colors. The Red legs of the Gull, I think are adding little bit of "drama" and make the image even more interesting. And what a powerful lovely Red color indeed! Bravo Ivan, in my opinion this image is a fantastic addition in TN library!

George Veltchev

Hi Ivan
Beautiful photo with very good composition and nice colours.
Regards, Christodoulos.

Hi Ivan,
Simple yet beautiful composition. Not only the technical aspects are brilliant but the color contrast also, only with a little red against the pale gray / blue tones. The reflection also adds a plus, and the bird is used on the photo as a diagonal line. One of your best shots (from the many high level one). Bravo.
Friendly regards, László

plasticity, the mirroring, quality good!

Bonjour Ivan,
Trčs belle et artistique publication dans une lumičre bien maitrisée et sous un excellent angle de prise de vue.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
Gérard

Forgive me but the bird has an almost religious symbolic look to it's eyes. Quite amazing....and in it's reflection. I tend to look inward. Funny how we project onto animals and birds, some human quality. Not true in all images by far, but true here.
Bob

Hello Ivan.
Thanks for the lesson pertaining the cold weather up the northern hemisphere. Your walk was fruitful in sharing with us this fine image. It looks cold and icy with the capture in beautiful reflection. You have a steady hand with that glass and converter (and I am talking about 600mm in full frame ). Well done and thanks for sharing.
Kind regards - Jusni

This is still laughing Ivan:) in spite of cold weather. Superb scene showing the life difficulties of birds in winter. Great composition.

God Afton, Ivan.

This is a superb image of great colors, lighting, details, and composition.

I knew that the Baltic had much less salt than the oceans (and even swam in it), but did not realize sea galls will drink that water!

All the best,

Ishi

Hi Ivan,

Brrrrrr - that water IS icy. The Gull and his reflection as he sips his cold drink are just wonderful. The excellent shades of white and the red legs provide just the right amount of color to make this picture so fascinating. You timed this perfectly to capture the moment. Interesting notes too. I am only too familiar with El Nino and El Nino but didn't know about the North Atlantic Oscillation.

Jane

Hi Ivan

Taxonomists are always mucking about with names, its so annoying!!! Fine capture of this gull on a cold afternoon. In eastern Australia we have La Nina this summer, so it s wet, wet wet. Lots of flooding and not much photography since I got back from Sth Africa, ha ha.

Chris

iyi akşamlar Ivan
Inner sides of Turkiye have continental climate and long cold winter period. However, the winter not come here yet. Normally it was under zero in this period. I hear from TV new Europe is very cold and snowy. I see this case from your last posts like Ulla's. You captured greatly this beautiful Skrattmĺs on icy water surface. sharp focus, white balance and coloraton superb. timing also great for beak and feet movements. nicely composed and presented with good notes.
Çok teşekkürler dostum. Ellerine sağlık.
Ahmet
