Ringed Plover, Charadrius hiaticula
Swedish name: Större strandpipare

We were not far from Ottenby lighthouse on the S. tip of the island of Öland, an area famous for resting migrating birds.

We were slowly driving along the road looking for waders within camera reach when we saw this female Ringed plover walking along the road verge. She then sat down on her nest less than a meter away from the road among the vegetative matter and rubbish brought in by the high water in the winter.

She remained on the nest while we quickly took some shots from the car before driving carefully away.
On our return we noticed that the male had taken over (see WORKSHOP).

Males are more distinctly black and white around the face

Though the Ringed plover is a summer visitor to Sweden arriving in the spring, it is a resident along the coasts of NW Europe and those that migrate spend the winter in NW Africa.

This was taken at a distance of about 4 meters (13ft) with the camera hand held
After moderate cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened and converted from RAW.

Bonjour Ivan,
It took me at least three times to open your posting..finally I succeeded!
Amazing to read that these Plovers nest so close to the road! Interesting too to show both male and female in the nest and to describe the differences of plumage. Fine natural bird-picture.

Fine image of this plover who is brave enough to have a nest so near to the road, well spotted and captured. tfs.

Very pleased to see the male on duty in your workshop, Ivan. I as an Indian husband expect my wife to brew the morning tea and serve it to me in bed. Never returned the compliment in my entire life!
A very attractive image in which I can see an expression of contentment on the face of the female Ringed Plover.
Thanks and regards.

Salam Ivan,

Well done my friend & TFS...Ivan!

Hello Ivan,
Very nice photo of this Ringed Plover in great sharpness and beautiful natural colours. Taken from the best possible POV with attractive eye contact. Fine composition. Excellent workshop photo too.
Incredible that they are breeding so close to the road.

Ciao Ivan. Excellent DOF and light's management fo the small cute one. Beuatiful colours and impressive focused eye.

Hello Ivan,
a cute and pretty bird here. Such a pleasant eye contact and the details are splendid. The view is so detailed with the nest and the pattern of the feathers.
Nice natural presentation.

Hallo Ivan
Both your images are beautiful with a feeling of tenderness that surrounds them both. It is interesting to read about this particular plover makes its nest close to the road as I have also found that the Blackwing Plover we find here also like to make their nest close to the road. The Ringed Plover is a pretty bird and it is the 1st time I see one of them. Thanks for sharing image and interesting facts in your note. Best regards.

Hello Ivan.
This is a fine bird and you are lucky to have one captured without even leaving the car. Nice details with the nest and looks like she noticed you in this shot.
Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi Ivan.
I tried to take shot from a car but without any success always. You are luckier and can to take so wonderful shots during trips. Both shots are excellent and present the species very well. I am surprised with animal behavior in developed countries as well as care of nature of their people. Warm regards and TFS.
