Duke of Burgundy, Hamearis lucina

Swedish name: Gullvivefjäril, taken after the name of the larval host plant, Primrose.

The former English name was ‘Duke of Burgundy Fritillary’, referring to the superficial resemblance to a very small fritillary.

It is however not related to fritillaries. Instead it is the only European member of the Metalmark family of butterflies, with many species in S. America.

This species of butterfly is rare in Sweden, but it is not too hard to find on the island of Öland, where the Primrose (Primula veris) grows in profusion. It flies during the last two weeks of May to the middle of June. Here is a male keeping guard on his territory. The female has slightly larger orange spots.

It requires warm sheltered areas that have partial shade to allow the Primrose leaves to be large. It thrives where the vegetation is lush but not too overgrown. Such habitats are becoming scarce owing to modern agriculture and forestry.

It is red-listed in Sweden, where it is classified as vulnerable.

It is still more common in C and S Europe where the longer summers allow two generations.

This was taken with the camera hand-held. After slight cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened, adjusted for levels and converted from RAW.

Ciao Ivan. Beautiful colours and light. Excellent DOF. TFS.

'Duke of Burgundy' is an impressive name, Ivan.
The picture is taken from a thoughtful perspective, giving the view of both sides of its wings.
The picture is a lovely composition with that fresh wide leaf.
Thanks and regards.

Bonjour Ivan,

wonderful tones in your picture Ivan, excellent light and beautiful composition, congratulations !
