Longhorn Beetle, Rhagium sycophanta
Swedish name: Ekträdlöpare, meaning ‘oak tree runner’

This is a very rare and red-listed species of Longhorn Beetle in Sweden where it is only found in the deciduous forested area of central Öland and in a few places in Eastern Sweden.

It is dependent on dead and dying Oak. This female was examining a pile of oak logs that were ready for transport to the saw mill. She is looking for a place to lay her eggs so that the larvae can feed on the inner bark and outer wood. Little did she know that this seemingly good place to lay her eggs would be of no use.

Sometimes other species of deciduous tree are used. Like for many species of Longhorn Beetle, white flowers are an attraction.

From this angle she looks like a deer with a quite a human expression and that is why I chose it.
For TN photographic purists a more standard portrait of her is shown in the WORKSHOP.

It is one of three species in the same genus and at about 2.5 cm it is the largest. It is more common in the oak forests of Eastern Europe, before the furniture and building industry destroy them. It is absent from the UK and the most southern Mediterranean counties.

It flies in June-July.

This was taken by the pile of oak logs with the camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened, adjusted for levels and converted from RAW.

Good species and happy to see one from the red list but hope this one prospers. Yes, the face with big eyes looks like a squirrel (with our those antenna) to me, interesting one. The WS image shows it in textbook perspective. tfs.

You have managed a fantastically original and impressive point of view to take the picture of this Longhorn Beetle, Ivan, and you deserve congratulations for this feat.
Besides the sharpness of the picture in the ambient light, it is the expression on the face of the subject that draws one's attention. You are right in comparing it with the human expression.
Thanks and regards.

Ciao Ivan. Great DOF, stunning details and sharp for the interesting insect in perspective. Wonderful colours.
