Spring had arrived 3 weeks late in Scandinavia and one of the first butterflies I saw was this uncommon species in Sweden.

Large Tortoiseshell Nymphalis polychloros

Swedish name: Körsbärsfuks

This species occurs on the island of Öland and in SE Sweden.

It over-winters as an adult to emerge when the spring arrives. After pairing the female lays her eggs on various species of broadleaf trees, especially Ulmus and Salix, sometimes fruit trees.

It is more common in C and S. Europe.

This individual was sunning itself on a dead tree.

This was taken with my long lens hand-held. After size reduction the image was sharpened and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Mercifully, the spring has started showing its signs in your country, Ivan.
It is a splendid capture of a veteran Large Tortoiseshell basking on the bark of a tree.
Great for me too to be your neighbour on the gallery today!

Bonjour Ivan,
Very fine picture of these rather rare butterfly which you have seen so well placed on a tree and with sunshine. I haven't seen this species this year, but I have to say with so few sunny days..there are not so much possibilities.
Have a nice Sunday

Hello Ivan,
I see the butterflies are out and about in Sweden, just like they are here in Ohio. I actually saw quite a few Cabbage Butterflies this afternoon as the weather warmed up to about 75 degrees F.
Love the super fine detail and vivid yet natural colors. It always amazes me how well these beautiful butterflies overwinter, even in the harshest of Winters.

Hello Ivan,
Truly a scarce sighting in your area as you notes reflect. Perfect POV of this Butterfly awakening to take it's flight to spread it's species. Clear detail and colors against the contradicting BG of the tree bark.
Best regards,
We as humans will have to get use to time changes and unexpected visitors to our respective areas due to climate change, part of evolution I suppose? I have seen bird species recently, only seen in our "Bushveld" (hotter) areas in the past, suddenly appear in the high-veld areas.
Best regards,

Olá Ivan bela imagem bela foto com nitidez muito boa meus parabéns.

Hi Ivan,
Beautiful photo of the "Big Fox-Butterfly" (Hungarian name), a real sign of spring, which I never managed to photograph. :-( Interesting camera angle, unique PoV to see into his eyes face to face. Great composition with the visible shadows of his majesty. In my home country, Hungary this species was common in the past, now it's rather occasional and protected by the laws. Congrats for the nice shot.
Best regards, László

Hi Ivan, A very nice Marco of this butterfly. Great sharpness and the shadow makes this presentation very natural to view. Good lights and in details...Thank for sharing
