Sandwich Terns (Sterna sandvicensis) Is a coastal species nesting in small colonies or single pairs sparsely distributed along the coasts of NW Europe, the Black and Caspian Seas. They are not very common.

They overwinter in the tropics.

An important scource of food are two species of Sand Eel one of which is caught in this shot. These are to be found in large numbers in the shallow waters of NW Europe during the summer.

Sandwich Terns have very good eyesight that enables them to see and then dive to catch the camouflaged sand-eels from a height as much as 15 meters.

This pair are about to feed their fledglings that wait on a nearby rock. This feeding ritual involves a lot of screetching noises.

This shot was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 20 meters. This was cropped to leave about 30%, sharpened and treated for noise.

Hello Ivan,
what a splendid capture of these sandwich terns! THis seems like a large catch for this fellow.
Well composed and fantastic subjects. Compliments, Jacob

Hej Ivan.
a very nice picture with beautiful light.
The details are very good and it's good controll of the white.
I like the compoition and POV too, But I dont't like they eating the Sand Eel (Nejonögon), it's very good to eat but hard to find these days. ;-)
Mycket snyggt.

Nu har du gjort ett riktigt kap.

Great capture of this couple of tern.
The white is well exposed.
Good moment showing, too.

Rather funny looking creatures, these Sandwich Terns, Ivan!
Nice POV and composition.
I may be wrong, but hasn't the noise filter flattened the details somewhat? Just a minor nit, sorry.

Hi Ivan

A nice catch, but the quality of the image isn't great. Looks like something must have happened during your post process work. :-)

Hi Ivan

A splendid capture!
Besides the fact that these lovely birds a rather rare sight on TN, you also maanged to capture them with an interesting sand eel in it's beak! Fantastic timing!
I really like the POV here, the great DOF and the charming colors.
Also the details are great, considerring the huge distance between you and the subject, the exposure is well managed and the composition is very nice.

Hi Ivan,
Nitpicking: the 'specular' highlights; more specific the detail in it.
But it is mainly nitpicking.
Concerning the content.. a great image. Good decisive moment displayed.

Oh, how cute this is. It's a beautiful photo iof the 3 of them on the rock.
The legs look a bit over-sharpened with the white halos showing up around them. Still, I do like the poses and they make me smile
