[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The picture probably shows
- Zygaena purpuralis
- family: Zygaenidae

As noted earlier, the species identity of this Zygaena is not 100% clear, because there are two vey similar
species which cannot be easily distinguished:
Zygaena purpuralis and Zygaena minos do not really differ in their wing markings but in internal morphological characters.
So, a decision based on this picture is not really possible.

Species information
I give informations on both species here:
Zygaena purpuralis / minos (family: Zygaenidae)
Distribution: From the Pyrenees eastwards through Europe to Turkey and southern Russia
Forewing length: about 16mm
Larval foodplants (selection):
- of Z. purpuralis: Thymus praecox, T. pulegioides
- of Z. minos: Eryngium campestre, pimpinella saxifraga

Information on the flower
- Dianthus carthusianorum is widely distributed in Europe and prefers dry and stony slopes.
Height of the plant: up to 60 cm.

Location: Switzerland, Wallis (Valais), flower-rich and dry open southwards directed slopes near Visp, about 1000m

Information on conditions:
- natural light
- ISO 200
- hand-held

Hello Peter,
well lighted, marvellously clear presentation of Zygaena punctum, with opulent details. Great to see the transparency of wings, and the perfectly controlled exposure to get good details also in the dark parts of thorax and head. Regards Siggi

wonderful play of colors and fantastic details
and sharpness of this Zygaena.
my compliments Peter

Hello Peter.
Wonderful picture, very well composed!
Splendid chromatism and excellent details.
Perfect framing! It is really a beautiful moth!
Congratulations and thanks for sharing!
José Roberto

Despite your being an expert on these matters, I am impressed with your candid note about the ID of this lovely Moth, Peter.
The image is very beautiful in terms of colours and composition.
That pink flower adds a special appeal to the picture.
I shot a Moth this morning which I might post today.
I don't think I would be able to establish its ID, so your guidance will certainly be called for.

hello Peter,
What a fantastic capture you share with us Peter.I am crazy about Red and grey/black combinations wherever they are found....be it in my sarees or on my walls or on my crockery ...and here you bring a combination that is so natural and in a texture that is as smooth as velvet. The sharpness and clarity are amazing.
Though Pink as a colour doesnot really compliment red and grey, here your focus and composition have managed to make the subject stand out excellently. The pink only adds a brief element of life and colour to the shot, but stands in relative blur thus lending maximum attention of the viewer to the subject.

Very well done.
TFS & Cheers

Hello Peter,
What a superb capture of this beautiful Zigaena species. Details are crystal clear and so beautiful! The colours are magic too and I love its pose on Dianthus. It all stands out very sharply against the neutral background too. Brilliant work!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Peter,
A vey beautiful and technically superb macro of this Zygaenid moth. The POV and clarity would normally suffice to give this an ID but understand the problem. In Sweden minos has rounder wings and the scaling is less dense even in fresh specimens, so from my own experience I would suggest purpuralis, but as you say, one can't be certain.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Beast wishes, Ivan

Hi Peter
Yes there is a problem with those two species. Your photo is very good. Nice sharp image with good diagonal compo, perfect not disturbing background and good exposure
I like it very much

Hello Peter,
Fantastic clear colours and extreme sharpness and details in this photo. Wonderful exposure. Great composition and BG.

A perfect and expertly macro capture Peter, both for the zygaenid moth and for the wild Dianthus flower. TFS this fine macro scene my friend.
