|Lesser known backyard denizens:|
For the day 07/07/07 I present you a Robberfly (Diptera; Asilidae; Epitriptus cingulatus; Gürtel-Raubfliege). You can tell the Asilids from the "beard" in front of their head, the stilett mouthparts and the indented part between the eyes. The species is guessed from the beltlike mark on the pronotum, the colour and the bristles of the legs. To Asilids even copulation does not come easy: look at the complicated locking of the abdomen. Fortunately the male has no inclination to stab the female as it does with prey flies, it would work against its own progeny!
I used the twin flash with diffusers. In PS I added the tips of a tarsus by stamping. Otherwise "the usual procedure".

Amazing picture of these robber flies. Excellent technique of macro shooting, nice rich colours, crisp sharpness and very interesting composition. Leaf and BG are great too. By best wishes for your trip and kind regards.

Very nice mating shot. Focus, sharpness and composition are very good. TFS
I do not know why I was not here before, as Asilidae are my favourite fly family! If you agree I will add this picture to the theme "Asilidae of Europe" :)
Great picture of great moment! (I would even say: lovely moment ;>)
Perfect sharpness and natural vivid colours. And one more thing: species which is not known for me! (and it is absent in the PES gallery :>:>:> so if you agree I would add it there with great pleasure)
My best greetings and best withes for 2008!
PS. Thank you for watching my bat picture :)
