[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Sorry, my TN friends, I will be back now after some bicycling and other chores. I continue my series:

Better known backyard visitors

Not everybody can win a beauty contest, this hopper does certainly not qualify. It's the 6 mm long larva of the Longhorn groundhopper (Orthoptera; Caelifera; Tetrigidae; Tetrix tenuicornis; Langfühler-Dornschrecke; Tetrix des carrières). I saw it today on nettles (see the spines!) but it usually dwells on the ground, the larva is hibernating under the dead leaves.

ID: I used B.Bauer et al. 2006. Die Heuschrecken Europas. Haupt, Bern.

Technique: ellbow-supported camera with macro lens, Kenko tube and twin flash. The picture was taken as RAW, 100 ISO, 1/15 sec, F/20. It was cropped, blemishes removed, sharpened as usual, put to format.

Hello Dietrich,
I have always wanted to photograph this genus but I don't have the equipment to photograph the adult, let alone a Groundhopper nymph. However, even with a suitable macro it is not easy to achieve the result that you have accomplished with this shot. The DOF and sharpness couldn't be better for a subject of this size and the composition is very pleasing.
Thanks for sharing this 'beauty'!
I must get macro equipment sometime.
Best regards, Ivan

Hallo Dietrich,

Hi Dietrich.
I am impressed with unknown for me charming creature. It is simply amazing. You managed to create a 3D image of it. Bravo. Wonderful inclined composition created by leaf. BG is nicely coloured and fine too. Well done (as usual) true macro shot. Best regards.
