Right now it's 13°C outside, time to check for a slowdown in insect activities! This Bee-fly male of 10 mm length (Diptera; Bombyliidae; Systoechus sulphureus = S. ctenopterus = S. ctenophorus (Mikan, 1791)) has just hatched from the ground. It is now waiting on the Aquilegia vulgaris flower growing wild in my yard for warmer weather. Once airborne it will be a photographers headache!

ID: www.diptera.info/forum/ and particularely http://home.hccnet.nl/mp.van.veen/bombyliidae/index.html help a lot. That the Bee-fly is not the early flying Bombylius often presented on TN is evident: the wings are uniformly brown, there are no dark patches and the venation is different. The males of all Bomyliids have eyes that meet on top of the head.

Technical stuff: to increase sharpness I tried an aperture of f/16, not my usual f/22. For compensation I dimmed the dual flash instead.

Hallo Dietrich
Time is little, but I cannot pass without leaving my comment and appreciation for this beautiful photograph. Wow this is really a great image. Amazing colours and very pleasant light. Marvellously darkened background, which emphasize this insects beautiful details. One again a beautiful photo from your lens. A well presented close-up, which will be added to my personal theme "My purple obsession".Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Brilliant capture of this fly I have seen for the first time, Dietrich.
Your very sharp image clearly demonstrates the features of this insect given in your note.
Along with the flower, it makes a wonderful composition.

Lieber Dieter,

Peter

Hi Dietrich.
We have met this species often in our place (I think) but I cannot take so amazing pictures. Simply great representation of the beauty on the fine flower. Subject, quality of the image are excellent at high range (as always for your works). I am impressed with DOF and details. Bravo.
Alexei.

Hello Dietrich,

Excellent picture of this bee-fly. Beautiful composition. Great sharpness. Splendid colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Dietrich, great composition with beautiful bee and splendid flower with good colors, fine details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Dietrich,
You've definitely benefited from the cool-down, crisp details..
A sudden drop is a rare occurence here at this time of year.
F/16 has shown us the entire insect along with some of the flowers detail, excellent. Colors, use of flash, POV, BG, and comp R all very good.

Hello Dietrich

A very interesting looking fly,I don't recall seeing this bee-fly bee-for.
The texture of it's fur jacket is excellent, and the focus is spot on with very good DOF.
Lovely lighting and colours.

Hello Dietrich,
Superb capture of this little Bee-fly that I've only seen darting around and impossible to photograph! You've caught it very nicely on the blue Aquilegia and I must add it to my favourites too!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla
