Better known backyard squatters:

This Red soldier beetle (Coleoptera; Cantharidae; Cantharis livida; Gelbroter Weichkäfer) is still hiding from the rain in a Mint bud although the sun is out again. It's a good moment for macros, the insects keep still while you adjust your gear. I made an effort to keep the flash effects at a minimum, in post-processing I reduced some reflections.

ID: there are about 90 species of Cantharidae in my region. I needed a key (Stresemann et al. 2005. Exkursionsfauna von Deutschland Vol.2: Insekten. Elsevier). This species is widely distributed in the Holarctic region and often abundant, but it easily confounded with the genus Rhagonycha (details in the claws).

Hello Dietrich!

Very common in my place beetle. You captured it in interesting situation - most of them are sitting on top of flowers. To be honest composition made some kind of snack - Redsoldieroburger or something similiar :-) Enough jokes. Insect looks great - sharp, detailed and with natural colours.

Hallo Dieter!

Hi Dietrich, great macro of beautiful Cantharis with splendid details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Dietrich,
Excellent quality macro, it doesn't get much better than this.
Love the DOF that shows us the complete insect, and the surrounding fine details as well.
Very well done,
