Lesser known backyard visitors:

this is the Yellow dungfly, (Diptera; Scatophagidae; Scathophaga stercoraria, often misspelled Scatophaga stercoraria; Gelbe Dungfliege). It sits on Poa trivialis and seems to be grinning into the camera. Since a wild fox regularely leaves its excrements in my yard, I have this occasional fly visitor as well.

I post this picture in memory of Paul Ward, a colleague from the University of Zürich who studied the evolution of body size and other life history traits in males and females of this fly.

Hi Dietrich,
Amazing macro capture of this loughing Yellow dungfly:) with superb details and great DOF/POV. I like also the green OFF BG. Additionally, nice dedication to a scientist!
Many thanks for sharing this!

Saludos Dietrich: Josep Ignasi Tejedor.

Hello Dietrich,
A great macro of the Yellow Dungfly taken from a frontal POV that is not usual when we come across this species, which is on cowpats from cattle that have not been medicated.
I like the composition of this image as the fly sits on the Poa grass and the sharpness, DOF and lighting are excellent.
TFS this delight,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Dietrich!

Yes, this fly is really laughing at us :-) Unique POV and pose. Rather aggresive face :-) Composition is clean and green/yellow colours look good. Nice dedication also, even dungflies have got fans around the world :-)

Hi dear Dietrich ,

Well done
Kind regards

Lieber Dieter,

What a great shot Dietrich.
A very competent macro and and excellent detail all over.
Great composition with an almost comical aspct to i.
Great work.

Hallo Dieter!
