Well known backyard inhabitants:

The Southern hawker (Odonata; Aeshnidae; Aeshna cyanea; Blaugrüne Mosaikjungfer) is a well known visitor in your yard in fall, particularely if there is a pond. The dragonfly has often been presented on TN. My challenge was to catch the dragonfly while in flight. A hundred thousand shots later I came up with this, only to find out that Joe (Joey) did the same quite successfully. My compliments go to him.

Technically I was limited by 100 ISO, weak flashes, the need to do it in subdued sunlight. Enjoy it anyway!

Hi Dietrich. I must admit i have tried this so many times and just got a blur , so i am very impressed with your picture. You have good detail in the body with a feeling of movement in the wings. Rich colours so good use of the light you had. I like it a lot. TFS.

Hello Dietrich
Absolutely Brilliant...and captured on a 100mm lense!!...I personally like the slow shutter giving such wonderful movement to the wings.
All the Best

Hello Dietrich,
Technically well done in terms of sharpness. The former is excellent due to to the applied depth of field(aperture).
The background isn't really 'dark'due to gthe flash.
I don't understand what you mean by..."technically I was limited by 100ISO,..."
Interesting contribution.
Thanks for sharing

Hello Dietrich,

I am simply amaised by your photo. You have got such a sharp image of a flying dragonfly! And it is not part of the insect to be in focus but the whole body.

Hallo Dietrich,

ein phantastischer Shoot. Herzlichen Glückwunsch. Ich glaube, sowas gelingt einem sehr selten. Die Schärfe ist brilliant.

Herzliche Grüße

Hallo Dieter!

Dietrich, this one is much better than mine! It's much sharper and very detailed.
The composition is really dynamic.
Superb DOF.
Great focusing.
Exceptional work!

p.s thankyou for the kind words :-)

Excellent inflight action Dietrich,
I tried my hand at this two days ago, nothing anywhere near as good as this one..
They would not hover in place long enough for me to catch a break :(
Well done!
