[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This picture is technically not quite perfect.
Anyway, I present it because it shows a
rare aberrant form of
- Melitaea didyma
- family: Nymphalidae

English: Spotted Fritillary
French: Le Mélitée orangée
German: Roter Scheckenfalter

Usually, the hindwings show the same orange-brown ground colour as the forewings. In this specimen, however, the hindwings are light brown and resemble those of female didyma.
A typical didyma male is shown here!

Species information
General distribution: Middle and South Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, West China and North-Africa. In Europe the species is missing in Great Britain, Fennoscandia, The Netherlands and the northern parts of Germany and Poland.
Foodplant of the caterpillars: Several species of Linaria, Plantago, Veronica, Digitalis, Stachys, Valeriana, Verbascum.

Location
Swiss Alps, Valais (Wallis), Zmutt-Valley, above Zermatt facing the famous Matterhorn.
Open alpine area at about 1950 m.

Conditions
- very bright sunlight
- ISO 400
- handheld

Great capture Peter!
I taked some pictures this year of this species too but not one of that!
Never saw the underside wings with this color.

Saludos: Josep Ignasi Tejedor.

Hello Peter,
What an interesting aberration you're showing here! It looks very strange indeed. It's always exciting to see these odd specimens. I think your capture is excellent, very sharp and colours look natural. It stands out very nice against the stones too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Witaj Peter,

Hab herzlichen Dank
Einen schönen Abend
Anne

Hallo Peter,

Dieter

Hallo Peter
The rare aberrant is different ones I have seen. as you not, sometimes, especially for rare species, photograph quality not important as much as others. but this posts already great macro-shot. You captured it with a nice focus from great POV under good light. Nicely composed and presented with good informative notes. Thanks for sharing, have a nice week.
Ahmet

Hallo Peter,
interessanter Schmetterling.
Helmut

Hi Peter.
I think you are not quite right. I am impressed with quality of the shot and applied technique. Superb DOF, ultimate details and reproduction of all features of the butterfly and ground. Colours and lights are wonderful and composition and POV are the best too. Well done and TFS.
Alexei.

I usually don't like photos with the butterflies on earth or stones, but this one came out unusually well. Gary
