Lesser known backyard predators:

The Common long jaw, as this 11 mm long female spider is called, (Aranea; Tetragnathidae; Tetragnatha extensa; Gemeine Streckerspinne) can be easily found in a meadow near open water.

ID: The tetragnathids have short third legs, the others are elongated. Their web has a charasteristic hole in the center as can be seen here. A help is www.araneae.unibe.ch/Homepage/Bestimmung/Bestimmung_Ganz.htm. This species has a light "spear tip" drawing on its sternum.

The males look quite different, with big chelicers (see workshop section).

Hi Dietrich
A good macro of this spindly spider. Good DOF to keep all of the subject focussed, but to still leave a blurred background. Well exposed and good use of flash to bring out the delicate details.
Kind Regards

Bonjour Dietrich, bien belle présentation de cette arachnide qui a su prendre la pose ad oc et présenter son bon profil!! mes félicitations, Happy new year, Didier.

hello Dietrich

Hello Dietrich,

A nice, sharp shot of this interesting spider. I think I may have photographed one of these here in Midwestern USA (not as well as you have), and I've been having trouble ID'ing it, so you have helped me with putting a name on my spider, thanks!

Hallo Dieter!

Hi Dietrich,
Great post showing both sexes of this tetragnathid species.
Excellent DOF, detail, and use of flash..
Well seen from your BG also.
Nicely done & have a great day,

Hello Dietrich!
So tiny and so elegant! Very nice capture of this Tetragnathidae spider. Details are very good, every single part of spider's web is visible :)
As for me a little too strong light, but in general - very unique and good presentation :)
Greetings and all the best in 2009!

Hi Dietrich.
Very attractive and unknown for me species. You have represented it perfectly. Combination of damped up colourful and smooth BG and brilliant sharpness and details of the spider and its web is stunning. Bravo. Perfect, as usual, close-up. TFS and best wishes.

Lieber Dieter,

My fav angle is when the jaws are visible. They are awesome beauties with an unexpexpectedly timid habit despite the appearence. Great shot!
